    Westlake....fun, yet confusing

When I have been there yes, decoys have had their lines wraped and have been set on top of each other in a sled. (If anyone can argues that being treated like wood/crap should take out that pillow and go to the tank judging or more so start collecting dolls) I never recall birds floating...

    Westlake....fun, yet confusing

Your kidding right? As one of only a handfull of volunteers who have dorn a pair of waders and trudged out, set up, moved and picked up decoys in all kinds of weather in the last 8 years at the Flats show. I take issue with some of your comments about the handling of the decoys. First...

    Westlake....fun, yet confusing

thanks John but that doesn't address any of the issues raised. I have been wanting to attend this show and plan to do so in the next year or two and enter a few birds in. But the issues raised are concerns for me. I only do shows for fun as the ultimate judge of a decoy in my mind is years of...

    Westlake....fun, yet confusing

Wow, thank you for an open and honest prespective. I have not seen any pics of the gunning birds, but the simple fact they were being judged at such a close range I do have a problem with. A third generation carver who himself is in his 70"s answered my question, "why do so many upperbay...

I need help starting my decoy collection

Collect what you like, everyone has their own nuiances when it comes to collecting. For me there are two tiers, 1) has to be used in my rig on a regular basis(modern or antique), 2) has be old,(preference of pre-1920) shows its wear from years of hunting, therfore can be place on a shelf.

    Juniper lumber

Depends on the size of the tree. If he won't cut the heartwood out, no matter what the dimesions some peices will be heartwood. I have never priced out juniper but if price is normally comparable to Northern white cedar, I would have him cut it out and pay for the waste.

    SxS question

I do shoot steel and modern loads in most of my old SxS's if choked correctly. But this particular gun is not of the build quality of Smiths, Foxes or Parkers. Which is why I recomended low pressure loads from someone like RST, not just "no steel".

    my best decoy yet

It will hunt, I do have to compliment you on the back color, it looks nice and dark. Its my pet peeve to see the back a lighter grey on redheads, its like some carvers have never handled a real bird. keep tweeking and it will only get better.

    SxS question

I can't help you on proof marks, but a quick look in my book lists the maker and sears affliation as post 1915. The gun was made by meridian arms and is esstentially the same as a stevens 311 as Tim suggested. It is not a gun I would shoot any modern off the shelf loads, lead or steel. I would...

    Double Barrel Double Discharge

Everyone of my doubles is double trigger gun, and only one has ejectors I prefer the KISS method. I don't know if there is any manfacture or patent of a signle trigger that is 100%. Italian guns seem to do better than some, but from my prespective they all have issues. I would suggest doing...

    Hey tod O

Yeah, we did. My brother befriended a hardcore Lessor chicken hunter over a year ago and he invited us down for a day while we were in KS quail hunting this last week. They estimated we saw over a 150 chickens that day. We put up roughly 6 coveys walking behind the dogs, then when we hit a...

    Pudelpointer Question

Yeah I have, I have seen a few of the JGHV bred and tested dogs. From my limited experience they are bit different than the NAVHDA tested dogs that I have only read about. The PP I have witnessed weren't the Racing high powered types, more blocky methodical searching dogs. The one thing you...

    Hey tod O

Didn't get it over a dog, but after trudging through mud and snow for miles on end today, I was happy to shoot a Lessor. Been a very good KS trip this year. I will give you details when I get back.

    Smallest natural retriever?

Ok eddie, I am going to chime in, first and foremost, the level at which most dog training is done with an ecollar, would be safe albeit uncomfortable around a persons neck. It is not SHOCKING them to their knees, in fact if the dog is vocalizes in most cases, its to hot. Two, have you ever...

    Smallest natural retriever?

Understand, but to answer your question, no. I put the highest probablity of natural ablities in the contitental breeds under the euro system, not under AKC. These dogs are only sold to hunters, MUST be tested in hunting abilities(retreiveing among them) and conformation before ever being...

    Smallest natural retriever?

labs have been the only dog bred for retrieving and hunting in the last 100 years? or because ALL labs that are bred are for hunting? I'll never understand why there are so many ego's when it comes to dogs. Fact is all dogs have positives and negatives, there are X amount of dog breeds in the...

Vaccinate your dog to prevent Lyme disease

Just to add to this Vaccinations are not 100%. While living in MD my male contracted both Lymes and rocky mountain spotted fever. There wasn't a day that went by the he did not have frontline and was always up to date with his vaccination for lymes. Apparently there is two different lymes...

    browning A-5 question

I used a old A5 Mag all season as my primary gun was broke. I had a 30" full choke barrel and I searched for a while an found a 30" mod on gunbroker for $200, that is cheap for a A5 mag barrel. You can almost buy a used jap complete gun for the price of asking prices of some choke tube...
