It Could Be A Great Opening Day Saturday.....

How about all that rain ?!? I slept in on Saturday because I didn't want to mess with the circus in the rain. It never rained a drop, snow only... The general report around here is that the fields were good, water was spotty. How'd you do?

    Carving Books

I think I gained a lot more with Matus' book than with Grayson's, and I'm a huge Chesser fan. All 3 are cheap when bought used. Another I really like, is Costilow's "Making Traditional Hunting Decoys" book with Cans, Redhead & Scaup patterns. EDIT* I just saw the prices of this book...

    NDR--Deer Etiquette

This. On our waterfowl opener, I set up 30 yards from a bow-hunter, he was already in his stand & never made a sound nor flashed his light at me. I didn't see him until 20 or so minutes after sunrise, and got the heck out of there. I felt terrible as I probably ruined his hunt, but if he...

Dogs flying Delta soon to have to be flown Cargo

Been thinking about getting mine checked off as a service dog. Besides this, the big benefit is that a hotel can't turn her away either...

    A bird hunter was born

My oldest is 5 now, and has always had an interest in birds, decoys, etc... We threw a little gas on that fire today. He walked with me for two hours and never complained a bit. Last year on the 15th I was breaking 1 1/2" ice, this year it was 65. We took advantage of the nice weather. He...

    retreiver training books

Great name! I really like "The 10 minute retriever" & "Retrievers from the inside out", I also followed Evan Graham's program relatively loosely, but I found the videos fairly helpful. Enjoy the ride!

    No modern guns here....

I'm in for the "old gun" season! Where/how do we draw the line between modern & pre-modern shotguns?

    November Workbench...

I can't wait to see it. I was just looking at my 4 LL Bean geese wondering why I hadn't sent them yet...

    No modern guns here....

Rick - What shells are you shooting with your twist barrels? I've got one that just sits, due to lack of knowledge with twist barrels and what shells I can shoot.

    Maurilio pintail whistle...

If you're not 100% committed to the Maurilio, take a look at Aaron Wingert's whistles. They don't have a fluttery thingy so you've got to do that on your own, but I really really like mine.

Has anyone sent a barrel to Mike Orlen?

Bill - They are on the short list as well, although a longer turn-around time & double the cost...

Has anyone sent a barrel to Mike Orlen?

I've got a Sweet Sixteen and a Ithaca 500 O/U barrel I'd like to have opened up and a Mag 20 barrel I'd like to have threaded for choke tubes. It looks like that is about all Mike does anymore. The reviews I've read are good, but I was hoping someone here had dealt with him personally. Thanks!

    Thought on Opening Day.

An "unsuccessful" hunt is one of the BEST teaching tools a hunter/trainer can have when forming a pup's blind manners, attention, etc...
