    Old Shells

take some of the rusty shells you have now and cut the ends off. see what they look like, cheap steel with no plating will most likely be rusty. some may be a solid chunk.

    Old Shells

DON'T SHOOT THEM, YES I AM YELLING LOL I used to do this to the old shells left over from the year before. get the rust off of the brass and shoot them. then one day it happened, as I shot at a blackduck the end of my barrel exploded, I went home and cut the crimps off of all the other...

    Splitting a block for hollowing?

depends on the pattern. IMO. a flat bottomed decoy you should leave a 3/4 or 1" solid bottom board to put back onto the upper half. on a round bottom style I always try to split where it will be less problematic. like not on the centerline of the tail or a wing if it will be carved in detail later.

    Paint used over epoxy

I have had really good luck with one spread of decoys I made by sealing the cedar with west systems epoxy, after fully cured sanding and putting a coat of gesso, then finish painting with goldens acrylics. they have stood up to some heavy use and are now 10 yrs old with only slight wear.
