    ODCCA show attending?

Definitely fewer vendors than ten years ago but seemed like twice as many private room sales to tour.

    Grandpa’s decoys

I worked on the hen today and made a mistake in reattaching the head, it was originally attached with a dowel that was rotten. I am driving a 5” exterior screw to replace it. Despite my careful planning it was slightly out of place, epoxy sculpt to the rescue.

    ODCCA show attending?

Well it was a quick in and out for me today. I would have like some time to meet with a few of you but was not in the cards this year.

It’s an inexpensive model from Michael’s. I’ll have to unearth it and look. Nothing fancy.

Today I finally got to a small project I wish I did last summer. I made six “test keels”. They are weighted in a way that will be hidden. They represent the two most common sizes I make. Then I made three of each that represent the three most common lead nugget placements within the wood...

You can also let it sit out and rot until they loosen. I’m sure you know this but they are just dense hair sheaths on spikes.

The key is to cook for 10 minutes then dunk in icy water for ten minutes. Alternate until done. Huge pain in the but.

Is everyone sick of looking at my decoys? I have a little touch up to do but the Niagara River rig is basically complete.

I told the story before but my wife came home to find a whole pronghorn skull in the microwave spinning in circles. She just sighed and told me I’m cleaning it. (I was having trouble pulling the horn sheath off, and yes it worked).

    Grandpa’s decoys

I’ve hit my first snag. Despite using a quality primer, stains seep through after 3 coats. I will let this last coat dry hard in front of the fire tonight and try one more. If that doesn’t work I’ll strip to bare wood and use two coats of spare varnish. Which would be a shame because I...

    Grandpa’s decoys

Ready to paint. I grabbed a few decoys for inspiration. On the left, E Allen’s that I painted last summer, on the right a pair of the originals. Which one to model? Maybe a little of both.

I thought I would finally rehab this poor hen that met a spinning propeller on a windy day in Chincoteague Virginia. It was the second decoy I ever made.
