    February workbench

I was happy to finish this one tonight. I dread doing hens but Steve Sanford has such great info. I sent the picture to some friends and they couldn’t ID it though. Lol.

    Black duck head

I’ll be honest that’s right up the alley of what I want to get to some day.

Are the feather details on the body of this made up of many individual brush strokes?

    Sealing burlaped decoys

I had a sudden dreadful thought today. I think that I used to put spar varnish over the tile mastic I used for burlapping decoys before priming. That was 20 years ago. I’ve done 8 or so decoys this winter without varnishing. Just priming. Does anyone just burlap and mastic without sealing...

    Black duck head

Part of my problem is that it is hard for me to get excited about painting decoys I didn’t carve. The bodies are some Herters foam decoys I inherited that I burlapped. The heads I carved. But my heart is in diver decoys and they are all gunning decoys.

    Black duck head

Confusion aside…paint pens might be interesting. But I did some dry brushing and stepped back 15 feet. Looked great. Birds won’t care. I’ll be honest my black ducks are herters bodies that I inherited from my good friend Jon Yenni and heads that I carved from pine that he gave me. He is not...

    Hunting / Fishing Boat

Wow I hope you don’t drive yourself completely crazy like I have done over the years. I have owned a lot of boats trying to find the right one. What style of fishing do you do? I exclusively troll on Lake Erie which generally requires a deeper wider boat. I’m a big Hewescraft fan. Heavy...

    Hornady Ammo

Typically, your barrel should like the 77 grain better than the 55 grain. My 223 is a 1:12 and won’t shoot anything over 60 grains very well.

Are the flexible And come painted or did you have to paint them? I have a canvasback sitting on a log and want to add a foot to it.

It’s not as bad as the time she came home and found the whole skinned pronghorn head spinning around in circles in the microwave. I was trying to loosen the horn sheaths. True story.

    Black duck head

I’ve been texturing with gesso and acrylic sculpting clay and agree that it’s a real game changer. Not the flocking I see here but half as good. I brush paint so that’s a limiting factor as well. I have an airbrush in a box in my basement that is defective because it doesn’t turn my decoys...

Thanks. I think I’ll try a wash for some texture. Then move on the the body.

    Black duck head

Do I really need to paint on the 300 feathers on the face or can I just leave it like this? I am finding the exercise rather tedious. This is a wooden head I carved that I will be putting on a herters body that I burlapped. It will be for big water hunting, mixed into my layout rig.

She’s always hiding my stuff. She says she is “putting away all of the crap I leave laying around”. I don’t know why I bother to have horizontal surfaces like tables, staircases, and the floor if I can’t leave something on them. Maybe I need to start returning the favor. Marriage is...

    February workbench

I was today years old when I learned that my wife’s sewing scissors were not to be used when trimming tile mastic covered burlap off of decoys.

I have an airbrush. It must be defective. Mine doesn’t do anything like that….
