One hundred years and one week ago....

100 year and one week ago was the passing of a species that once was estimated to comprise 25-40 percent of ALL the birds in North America. With flocks measured in hundreds of miles in length, and billions of birds. Some frontiersmen credit this species with surviving hard times. Of course it...

Either yesterday or today, the last 2 Great Auks were killed on Eldey Island, off the coast of Iceland. The pair was killed and their egg crushed in the chase. Because if their rarity during their final years, large rewards were paid for skins by the top museums for their collections. So the...

Nice time to be on Gulf Barrier Islands...

We're doing shorebird surveys on the Isle Deniere chain. In the last couple of weeks, we've had a large influx of birds. The short-billed dowitchers, western sandpipers, black-bellied plover and semi-palmated plovers have all shown up in good numbers. Also, the white pelicans have returned and...

    Lewis and Clark's air rifle

I was using an air-power net launcher last week to catch curlew, and the discussion of air rifles came up. A friend mentioned an air rifle that Lewis and Clark had on their expedition and forwarded this like. It's pretty cool...

    How thinghs change....

I was reading "Tides ending" by B.B. last night and was struck by his comment son how the estuaries he hunted had changed from before WWII, through the war, and afterwards. He lamented areas that he would not see another gunner and with time those places became crowded with gunners, to the point...

    Waterfowl hybrids....

There always seems to be interest in hybrids. I found thsi web page looking to see if the birds that I was sold as rosybills are actually rosybillxredhead hybrids like I suspect. Anyway, they have pics of some real interesting hybrids. http://www.flickr.com/groups/hybridbirds/discuss/ Clint

With all the decoys being posted....

Actually I did these for the LA Environmental Educators for door prizes. They wanted something cheap and easy that teacher could do in the classroom. Just 1 and 2 lt coke bottles, chloroplast head, wheel weight keel, eye screw for attachment, and a quick and easy paint job (no color mixing)...

HMM, because so many like spinners...

Why can't I use live decoys? They're a whole lot more work than spinners (year 'round), and probably similar in effectiveness. Clint

    Some new birds....

I've never kept Meller's before. Hopefully they do well. Because they're territorial, I'm not sure how the extra female in the trio will fare, so I have to watch them closely. With the snows gone, it's time for decoys and building nest boxes! Fixed it....although if you think this makes...
