The way I was taught was using a simple calligraphy pen. Once the paint is thinned down to the proper amount it flows pretty good. The pen doesn't have a reservoir so you'll need to refresh the paint frequently. The area of vermiculations on the pictured wood duck took about 20 minutes. Good luck!

Sounds like there are some good ideas for bags already. I like to keep my gouges / chisels protected with a length of clear pvc tubing for transport.
