Question For New Members (Joined 2020 or later for the purpose of this survey)

I started way back when. I was looking to build a new duck boat and googled boat designs. Then I found the carvers corner. That was close to 20 years ago and the site was new. I think the archives don't even have the old carvers posts anymore.

    Gunning decoy rig

Up here in Alaska we see everything under the sun. I have a hugely varied decoy collection for whichever spot we decide to hunt. A lot of my hunts are small water. I'll take teal, wigeon, ringers, couple spoonies and two mallard hen ripplers. Around a dozen in my kayak. I also have a pair of...

I need more storage. My boat is full of decoys. More shelves are full of goose shells and walls are nothing but dozens of silos hanging from pegs. It's a storage problem. Not a decoy problem????

Chena is still frozen. Weird year Don. Snowing again today. Aargh! Will this winter ever end?

Carving had to stop. Spring is arriving. Had to get more bee hives built up ( paint goes on today) and cleaning out the greenhouse. It actually rained yesterday. Snow will melt fast now. It's been a long brutal winter in Fairbanks. Record cold and record snowfall. We're definitely ready for spring.

I've been using 12 guage O/U's for 20+ years. Last year I switched to a 20 gauge Weatherby O/U. It is much lighter than the 12's. When you use a 3" shell for ducks and geese you really feel it. A 20 gauge semi auto with a gas system should definitely take the bite out of the lighter gun. For...

    buffleheads

I make my buffleheads small and they are still much larger than the real birds. I see yours are much bigger than real ones. Debating reducing my teal and buff patterns by 1/4". They seem to decoy and swim right up to bigger decoys. Don't think the ducks care for the disproportionate size.

I've always wood burned when I wanted feather detail. Never really understood the stoning process. Probably since 95% of my birds are smoothies. I do a few nice mantel pieces with wood burning but mainly working birds. My daughter saw some videos on the stoning process. It'll be interesting to...

My daughter wanted to do a really fancy paint job on a shoveler so I rounded this guy and got him to this point yesterday and today. I'll do the details work on the bill tomorow then take him over her place ( excuse to visit the granddaughter). She wants to try stoning and texturing before...

This is one of the gunner drakes my daughter finished painting. He's one of six that we're sending to a guide friend in SE Alaska. A guide that uses a couple different carvers wood decoys is pretty rare.

We had a few old squaw hens land next to harlequin and common golden eye decoys this year in Whittier. Rare occurrence for sure. Thinking the last 4 birds on a longline being old squaws would work well. Thanks Don.

Pretty much a finished product. We'll add a brass placard in the lower right ( carved and donated by.....). An easy way to make one carving into two for a display piece.
