    All Things Flocking

I wouldn't hunt if I couldn't hunt over my custom double flocked Speck decoys.... All thanks to Don Mintz and his generous sharing of valuable information. Yesterday was a prime example. Limits of Specks for my blind partner and I. Cupped and webbed to say the least. No other shots heard in...

    Does "detail" make a difference?

G and H vs. Custom flocked DSD speck..... A lot of hunters say "if they're close enough to see the difference, you should've already shot them...." I'm guessing that it's just a matter of personal preference.

    August workbench

Accolades to you are well earned..... I purchase my flocking from Flocking Unlimited also. Big bulk amounts can be acquired at 3D Industrial in Southern California. Their prices are cheap and it is quality nylon flocking. But, if you don't buy large quantities the shipping costs are...

    August workbench

The absolute "beauty" of Don Mintz is, of course, his incredible talent AND his willingness and dedication to help others. This Forum is incredibly fortunate to have him as a contributor. I have followed his advice for years, on another Forum of self described "purists" ( in which he is no...

    DSD Snow to Speck "transition"

Good morning Don I appreciate your response. Yes, I am the Scotch Guard Guy. I firmly believe the S.C. enhances the decoy colors. At the end of the season, I evaluate the dekes for any " problems" - wear spots, fading etc. and correct them with flocking/ airbrushing as needed. Adhesion over...

    DSD Snow to Speck "transition"

I decided to take a bunch of my tired looking DSD snow goose decoys and convert them into speck decoys. Plus, heck, specks taste a lot better than tough, old snow geese... Everything double flocked. Rustoleum enamel paint for glue and airbrushing. Schoepfer's glass eyes.... Crazy I'm...

    Swan decoy floaters?

Lots of Tundra Swans in my neck of the woods( north Sacramento Valley). But.... this being the tree hugging, love and save everything State it is, Swans are protected.... They do make good confidence decoys, however. The Specks love 'em and it seems like ducks decoy into them better than they...

    Restle coated Tundra Swans

I'm a complete novice at restle coating, to say the least. I sifted the walnut shell over wet enamel paint. When all was dry, I did an overspray of Gorilla glue spray foam ( when I saw the price of Titebond I took a cheaper approach). These dekes have currently been in service for 2 months and...

    Restle coated Tundra Swans

Carving the foam for these was pretty simple. I'd say that medium grit sandpaper and a sharp knife were my go to "instruments" for the carving. I did not burlap them as I wanted to keep them as light in weight as possible. Direct restle coat to foam. They'll be subject to some wear and tear I'm...

    Restle coated Tundra Swans

At 74, I never dreamed of making my own dekes. But, with considerate help and inspiration from Don Mintz, a whole, new aspect of waterfowling has opened up for me. These are some "foamer" sleeping Tundra Swans I carved and coated with finely ground walnut shell. They weigh 3# have a hollow...
