Trailering a light boat (e.g., Devlin broadbill)

Thanks for all the excellent advice. I'll report back how the lighter springs work out this fall.

Trailering a light boat (e.g., Devlin broadbill)

Good thoughts. I priced springs and for the 500lb 2-leaf slippers they are only 15/each, So I'll probably just get new ones. I thought double-eye springs would make for less bouncing around, but the lighest ones I found in that style are 1000lb. Checking the tire pressure is also a good...

Trailering a light boat (e.g., Devlin broadbill)

The trailer seems pretty tight. My impression is that the load is just too light and the springs can't absorb enough impact. The trailer does a lot of bouncing around, and I think it is hour after hour of this that allow enough movement for wear to occur.

Trailering a light boat (e.g., Devlin broadbill)

Thanks for the responses Scott, Bill, and Tod. I assumed my boat was too light for any size leaf springs to really provide much flex and relief from bumpy roads, but I'll give 500lb 2-leaf springs a try. As far as strapping it in tight, I do this with 3, 2"+ ratchet straps, plus 3...

Trailering a light boat (e.g., Devlin broadbill)

I've had good times and success hunting out of my broadbill build the last 2 seasons. I'm noticing that the boat takes a beating on the trailer. I switched my bunks to horizontal carpeted 2x4s last season, but given the rounded shape of the hull, unfortunately most of the weight still ends...

    Another broadbill completed

I finished this boat up last september. I received a lot of advice from folks on this forum. Figured I should finally share a few photos and say thanks. Particularly thanks to Bill Burruss and Eric P for sharing detailed advice and photos. This was my first boat and the whole process was a...

    Epoxy primer?

Thanks Cody and Pete, I will go with the FME paint. Thanks for the heads up on this product. I see that LS&B notes that it acts as its own primer, but I'll probably try that Southern Polyurehtane's primer just to be safe. Here's a photo of where I'm at. Glassed the hull, now trying to...

    Epoxy primer?

I'm nearing the painting stage on my Devlin broadbill build. Any suggestions on a epoxy primer? After priming I was thinking of painting with Pettit Ship N Dec. I only found one source for Devlin's recommended PPG DP primer http://www.tcpglobal.com/ Kind of pricey (around $110 if I get...

    Devlin Broadbill huntability questions

Thanks for all the input. If I think I can do it without much trouble, I'll raise the deck a bit...and make a dodger. A larger boat is always tempting, but I know if it won't fit in my truck it won't get as much use as it should... too hard to turn around with the trailer on and I end up doing...

    Devlin Broadbill huntability questions

Hi again, A few questions for owners...After checking out some of the alternatives (DIY and Hybrid), I think the broadbill is what I need to safely layout hunt open water on central SK's lakes and reservoirs. * Will I be able to layout with my feet vertical under the rear deck (I wear a size...

Option for light weight Broadbill construction

Thanks for the reply Troy. Nice looking rebuild. Your canoe carrier looks interesting, in that each wheel has its own axle. Home build? have any pictures of the carrier by itself?

Option for light weight Broadbill construction

OK, well I think I will stick to specs. Perhaps the canoe caddy with some oversized wheels is the way to get it to the water. Thanks for the advice.

Option for light weight Broadbill construction

I'll certainly get the Devlin book, but Tolman's is a bit expensive in Canada, what are the general differences in philosophy? And to all, why the discrepancy between reported weights on threads here, and the specs on Devlin's page (and duckboats.net), that suggest weight closer to 100 lbs?

Option for light weight Broadbill construction

Hi All, I wan to build a Devlin Broadbill this summer (my first attempt). I've read on here that weights of "to-plan" builds are around 150 lbs, although the specs suggested lighter. I would like to get pretty light, although not to the point where I have to really baby it. I will not be...
