Kodi turned 10 today... as did his sister Bella ( owns Brandon Yuchasz)

Hard to believe!!! But he had great year hunting, and hopefully 1 or 2 more!!!! followed by a long retirement by the fire.

He does not care for the posed pictures... but, it is mandatory

All of my Peakes have lived a minimum of 14 years...You're going to have to back off on the cold water but not regular season for that boy. Just keep letting him lay by the fire and feed him good food.

Congratulations on a good season with a beautiful dog. The time goes by so fast. I also have a Bella, my 11 year old black lab. Her retrieving days are over. Arthritis has taken a toll on both of her hind legs. Hard to get in and out of the boat. All retrievers deserve a comfortable bed by the fireplace in retirement.

I sure enjoyed sharing the blind with Kodi last fall. Hope to do it again next season. Tell Kodi I'll have some treats in my pocket as a late birthday present.

Phil, he looks to be in great shape! Hopefully you two have many more hunts together! I've found it is the upland work side of a dual purpose retriever that suffers from the passage of time most. Plus, it puts more wear and tear on them over time. Out of seven dogs, I have never had a lab survive beyond age 13, two of mine passed far earlier than that. Enjoy your time together, like a very good spirit, drink it in long and slow, savoring the moment.

We (the dogs and I) went for a snowshoe for three hours yesterday in the peak of the storm. A beautiful steadily falling snow with very little wind. I was thinking about the same thing over the course of our walk- I need to spend more time hunting with them while they are in their prime years. When we arrived back at the house I blew the 9" off the driveway and came back inside to put the last wash coat on six gadwall hens I have been painting for the last few weeks (seems like forever, but hens take a ton of time for me to complete), and check on the epoxy seal coat on my last balsa wood canvasback hen, before starting dinner prep. After a half-hour or so, when I attempted to stand up I was quickly reminded which of the three of us is further down their senescence timeline...creaking my way upstairs to start chopping.

Happy birthday Kodi, Give that doggy a bone!

He's gotten a little grey in the face, like a lot of us, I guess.

Happy birthday kodi, you are a lucky guy to have such a nice area to hunt and a good gunning partner. Enjoy.

Like a Tshirt I have " In dog beers I've only had one". Atta boy Kodi. At times like this I remember Walker who only lived 4 years before the big C sent him to the Rainbow Bridge, enjoy every day. Just watched the morning news with my Booker curled up in my lap. 65 lbs of lap dog.

Given, that he never is on a chair, I am not sure how much of a lap dog he will ever be, but I hope that he is around for another 4-5 years in good health, so I can spoil him more! I have never let him jump off the tailgate, as I have heard how hard that is on a dog. I don't upland hunt, either. He does tear after rabbits, squirrels and woodchucks though.

Thanks for all the well wishes!

Bob... Come on... Kodi is a CBR... He doesn't need or take hand signals... He KNOWS where the bird is...

There is a line in Robert Michener's novel, Chesapeake, that outlines how an individual "fit" in eastern shore society in Maryland. It centered on whether he or she was a Republican or Democrat, Catholic or Protestant (or, Quaker), whether personal preference favored a "she" or "he" oyster stew, and whether you were the owner of a chesapeake or a labrador retreiver.

So, at age ten his character preferences should be well ingrained: Does Kodi vote a straight party ticket? Does he regularly attend Mass? Which version of oyster stew does he prefer? Does he play well with "lesser" breeds?

Rick - Over the years, three of our many retrievers have had "Chesapeake" inspired names: Dutch Mike - "Dutch" ( a Chessie named after the long gun that the Turlocks used); Choptank Amos T. - "Amos" (Named for the founder of the Turlock clan); And Shooter's Deal Island Skipjack - "Skip." (After the 'arster drudgin'' boats Michener immortalized in his chapters on the watermen.

;-) ;-)
Great answer! Phil. Must admit (grudgingly) that the CBR we once owned was the finest marking dog we've ever had.

I thought the punt gun was named "the Twombley', after the farmer Turlock purchased it from?

You are correct, Rick. Dutch Mike was picked from a listing Michener ran through when talking of the long guns.

The answers are not always as easy to extract as one might think!.. While it may turn out to be a straight party ticket in the end, each vote is weighed and cast individually. The only Mass that Kodi ever attends is the vigil in the Marsh or when the Lords name is used around the house (typically due to the result of a play or sporting event) or when an easy bird survived. Kodi will eat, with out prejudice, either variety. He has not had the occasion to play with lesser often. Usually only other Chessies, but he does play well with others. I guess he is progressive!
