I would like to hunt over it this year.

Short answer is yes. I was going to announce it after the auction concludes for last years decoy...speaking of which, why don't you guys get up there to the auction post in the stickies and bid it up. The traveling decoy auction funds go a long way towards keeping this sight running without fees or adds.

How about a black duck this year?

No problem, carve one, offer it for donation and lobby the members to vote for it over any other decoys offered for donation...simple, right?

Seriously though, that is how it works. I'll start by asking for decoys to be offered for consideration and at the same time, start taking names of prospective hosts. Hosts are prioritized on a first come, first served basis, however if you have specific dates which you want to hunt, you will limit your chances of fitting into the schedule, where as being more flexible will allow you better chances of getting to hunt it, even if it isn't at the peak of migration.

I was thinking of bumping it up to two decoys again this year, as the schedule was quite tight last year with a few late commers not getting in on it but I will have to see enough serious hosts to justify the time spent on the extra logistics. We have done one diver and one puddler in the past, or I was thinking of asking if any carver(s) would be willing to donate a pair, to be hunted separately and auctioned off together.

Any and all comments welcome, as this is OUR Traveiling Decoy, I'm just the organizer,

I'm new to this site, but I would love to hunt over the traveling decoy. When I first read about it I instantly loved the idea. I have a few antique decoys and have always wonder about the places, people and birds they've seen. That's why I hold a special place for a few of my grand-father's and father's decoys. I have a few stories to go with them.

A black duck would be great. South Jersey has one of the largest wintering black duck populations. It wouldn't be hard for a few birds over the decoy.

As the post reads....this is a traveling decoy. It will be traveling to many areas that are not common to Black ducks.

Good point Mike. Just the thought of a black duck had me a little excited. It would be one that I would definitly bid on to add to my collection.

That is quite true, however, the vast majority of ducks will decoy into a spread regardless of specie (yes there are exceptions). Having hunted several of the traveling decoys in the past, and read the logs from said decoys, there have been a wide variety of duck species shot over the decoys of previous years.

Personally I enjoy putting out a few unique decoys in my spread. It certainly takes away from the tin soldier look.

Unfortunately, I am not a carver... yet! Hope to get into it sometime soon, just too much on my plate right now. But, yes... please count me in for the traveling decoy this year. Can you put your preference in for a puddle duck over a diver?

Count me in to guys !!! Had a great time the last few years we did this , maybe i can get the Conn. group to join me Hint Hint !!!! It does not matter to me what we have it is more about getting together and enjoying the hunt , it is for the site guys .

Very true--as I recall, last year during his stay in Maine Donnie the Mallard (and a few friends) mostly attracted big flocks of ringnecks. (Not to mention at least one woodie my partner missed . . . . .) He got a little closer to what he was supposed to do when he decoyed in a black on the last day of his stay. As far as my results showed, he was pure poison for attracting park ducks--not that I'd complain about that.

How 'bout an eider this year? We could make it feel at home at the north end of both coasts, but inland and down south it would be as out of place as me chasing tarpon or Dani up here after brookies. But that big white body is real visible, and I bet it would help pull ducks in.

Any and all interested can shoot me an email to TravelingDecoy@gmail.com subject:host. Include pertinant info...name, address, season dates or dates of any special trips or hunts you want to target.

Thanks
Chuck

Kevin,

I would really like a Black as well. Contrary to what was posted after my post, most are quite picky about using a species of decoy not common to their area. Many, even Mr. President also feels that you must always use an odd number of decoys....

Will you be in Tuckerton next month?

I'm planning on going. Was hoping to bring a boat this year, but I've been tied up all summer with projects around our new house. I will have atleast one boat at the South Jersey Sportsmen's Jamboree (Oct 1 & 2). I'll be set up with the DU stand. I'm planning on bring a boat next year to Tuckerton. I'm building one for our DU chapter that I'm starting next spring. But this year I'm giving the trap shoot a try.
