2014_duck_stamp.jpg

Sales for the 2014-2015 Federal Duck Stamp and Junior Duck Stamp began on Friday, June 27, 2013 at 10 a.m. with a special event hosted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bass Pro Shops at the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., where waterfowl hunters, birders, stamp collectors, conservationists and outdoor recreationists lined up to be among the first to buy the nation’s most unique and successful conservation stamp. The new stamps can be purchased online, at many sporting goods and retail stores, and at some post offices and national wildlife refuges. Since 1934, the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp ("Duck Stamp") has provided more than $850 million, conserving over 6 million acres of crucial habitat throughout the United States and its territories.

Carl~

It's always an important day when the stamps become available. I usually wait to buy mine until August - so I can first get my NYS Hunting License - to which I have always attached it.

On the other hand, I wish there were a way that the artwork could get out of the rut it has been in for many years now. The winners - although well-done - always fit a formula of composition and style that forecloses many of the earlier stamps that were more artistically interesting - and which have stood the test of time. "The Wild Duck Chase" is an interesting read on this topic.

All the best,

SJS

I agree, the artistic side is in decline, and taxidermy renderings are the norm. A reflection of the decoy, and flat art print, stage Waterfowling has been in for many years now. Ding Darling wouldn't have a Snowballs chance today...

Thanks, Carl. This is another thing that provides that boost for when and until duck season actually starts. I need to go get my stamp.

The July/August 2014 issue of DU magazine has a very good article about the Federal Duck Stamp, and shows every stamp. Easy to compare and contrast, then and now. The cover of the magazine is a stunner if Green Wings trip yer trigger. I'm fortunate to have a flat art painting of flying Green Wings on driftwood, by Jim Schmiedlin, over my paint table. Now there is a Artist for a Federal Duck Stamp!

I applaud and appreciate All duck stamp winners then and now, but I'm a Old School guy. The King Buck stamp is still my favorite...

The stamp that always struck me as the most artistic, is the one for the '56/'57 season of 2 mergansers flying by a leafless tree on a small point. Of course I'm nuts for mergs any how...

Now we got it goin'. Everyone should have a chance to name their favorite Federal Duck Stamp - Or should we start a new thread with that title?

Vince~

Why don't you start a new thread?

I just took a quick tour through nthis month's DU then the USFWS website. I "narrowed" my list down to my Top Ten....maybe it needs to be "Your Top 5".

The Hoodies are the first stamp I bought:

But the Brant always struck a chord with this Atlantic Tidewater gunner....
