3hp johnson

Perry:
I'm not familiar with the 3hp, mine have been 18hp+. First check the compression -if it's way off factory specs, junk it unless you're into major rebuilds. Get youself a service manual and start going through it. Coils, points, condenser, wires, fuel filter, water pump impellor, these are the items that you'll want to replace unless they look like they have been replaced recently. For the most part, if the compression is good and the physical shape is decent, I don't see where it wouldn't be worth fixing up.

They are a pretty simple setup and many don't have the running hours that you would expect. I have a 57' Johnson 35hp on my duck boat, runs like a champ.

Good luck!

Bill, I don't a three horse but a two and half Evenrude basically the same motor. I call it old dependable. If nothing else starts it does. I always carry it in the boat. a very good back up. I also use it on a small ten ft. boat. It moves that boat right a long. That would be a good motor on a BBSB not fast but easy to conceal. When you get where your going you can easily take it off on put it in the boat. AS Terry said, check it out, if the compression is good, it proubly worth working on. A little Sea foam after you get it started. Pete

If all it needs is a tune up I'd say keep it..but.. those things have the slide throttle across the face of the motor and no reverse..at least the ones I've had..so you would have to sit way back on the back deck to use it. Putting gas in the hole while out hunting could be a pain to unless you beach it. I like the newer Merc Mariners with the shift built into the throttle on the tiller, with one of these you could use a tiller extension and be able to get down in the boat when traveling in wind and waves and stay 300% dryer.

Hey Lee thats what you use a oar for.:) I hear some people use a rubber hose.:) The original reason for having a life peserver was to save the people who gassed up out in the middle of the lake. I have an invention that takes the risk out of that. I can't show you a picture of it yet, until I patent it.( I'm going to be rich) Then I can buy a decoy from every one who carves on this site. I have the nicest rig on this site next to Sutton. I just can't wait.(; }
I'll be able to buy one of those fancy Mec's too.

Use the oar for sliding the throttle lever over and holding it there? used to steer with the little carry thing on the front and hold the throttle slide with my thumb so it wouldn't vibrat back to idle. I'd like to find one of those old motors in pristine shape as they are probably the most dependable and toughest little motors ever built.

Here is about the best site I've found for getting help with them
http://www.maxrules.com/fixtuneitup.html

they are a pretty cool little motor. Should cost in the $150 range for a good clean one. The REALLY cool one to find is the folder. Here is one that just sold on ebay, they go for much more than 150.

super dependable. I have three of them I've picked up over the years. Still looking for a reasonable priced folder though.
