our black fish season opened up on July 1 with a limit of 2.

i scouted a new spot and saw a 30" 20lb+ giant, literally the biggest tog i have ever seen. but of course he was not there when i got out there and legally could shoot him.

we saw a bunch and managed a couple 17-18" fish and a couple 5+lbers.

My buddy there is the NEFOP observer, and is enjoying Georges Bank doing 1hr tows for winter flounder as i type this.

spearfishing is absolutely the coolest thing, it is amazing what you experience down there

Way to go Chris. Yes, spear fishing is a blast. I haven't done blue water spearing, just a bit around coral reefs down south. It turns diving from being just an observer to an interactive sport. Have Lion fish made it that far north or is the water too cold for them. Have taken a bunch of them - great eating.

Grey trigger is fantastic! Just hard to get out of that sandpaper they call skin.
Nice Tog pics, another of my "list trips" is a seabass/tog/fluke trip. That and a winter cod/seaduck trip!

Having grown up on LI where and when Blackfish were plentiful and often a throw away after the trawlers came in, several old timers advised how good they are to eat. So my last years on LI, 1980 to 1988, I searched for them off trawlers in Port Jeff, where there were dirt cheap or in the fish markets--in both instances you had to clean them yourselves, a big trial, but worth it. Basically, an unappreciated fish by most.

Nice tog Chris. Spear fishing has gotten popular in Barnegat Inlet in the last several years, although not my thing, I enjoy watching others do it. I think it is a young man's game.....

When I get to old I'll get a tank or hookah. It is definitely an awesome experience. I wish we had more visibility and could whack stripers. But nothing is legal in CT.
