A Butterball Morning...

Went out this morning with my Father-in-Law in his new floating blind that he built. (I introduced him to waterfowling last year and he's still in the learning stages. He wanted to build a plywood blind so he could stay warm. Old Farts, I tell ya!) I set out 9 Wigeon, 4 Buffies, and a hen and a drake Mallard, and that's it. Couldn't keep the Buffies away, but the Wigeon gave us fits. Circle, circle, and shortstop. 75 yards to either side all morning! Dang those Widgies! Saw a few hundred Geese all screwed up in the fog, but wouldn't you know it, I left the Goose floaters at home today! And that's the story, lots of Buffies, lots of Wigeon, lots of Geese, and NOTHING else! Didn't even hear a single quack, nothing but whistling and honking! Still had a blast though! Gotta love those little Butterballs!!!

I can relate with your father-in-law, Derek. Warmth is a prerequisite for duck hunting now. Sure glad you had a good hunt. Sounded like fun.

Thanks guys. I had lots of fun and hey, I was warm the whole time! It sure is nice to not wear a coat or gloves when it's 18 degrees out! I was actually quite skeptical of his blind at first. It's out in open water with ice behind it and nothing around to help hide it, but the buffies didn't seem to mind. We'll see how the rest of the season plays out hunting from it. It's been out for a couple weeks now and seems to always have birds around it. I've already dubbed it; 'The Buffie Blind.'

Here's a few pics of the monstrosity:

Left side; this side has a carpeted dog platform and ramp into the water for Xena. My seat is right next to her.

Right side; where the old fart sits, and is wide enough for two. This thing will hunt three quite comfortably.

Notice the heater on the floor in between us!

Call it what you want but if it works----good for you. I'm glad that your father-in-law shared the heat! Looks nice and comfortable.

Derek,
the fact that you have a father in law that likes duck hunting is a good start. And I can tell you that those condo blinds have a real nice feel to them once you start cooking eggs and bacon on the camp stove you bring next time.

Xena will really like the bacon.
