A case for redundancy....

Given the recent discussion of twin motors. Today I had a potent reminder why I like the idea of twins. Jen, Gus and I were out fluking and after a successful drift, I gave the motor a pull and pop-pop-blough. Pull, pull, pull... dead, no mutter no putter, just dead. Water. Pulled out the kicker and fired it up and headed to the nearest island, pulled the plugs and yes, water and lots of it. Cleaned things up, sprayed some magic stuff in. Pulled the cord, repeat process, repeat process. Pop, choke, pop, smoke. Bam, got her. Day not ruined and don't have to limp home on the kicker. Another drift and nothing. Had a little beach party to pick bait for next Wednesday and home with time to buy the fuel/water seperator that I should have had already and get the boat cleaned up for supper.

Few pics....

Can a fillet be too thick?

Tod,
That is one cute little boy, and it looks like he was having a good time. If you can get another just like him then you will have your 'twins' set up and ready to go :)

Seriously, having your kids in a boat with you puts the safety vs. cost discussion into perspective.

What time is dinner? If I can get a flight I'll be there and help you take care of those fillets ;)

good story other than the problems...

But you know better than to not have a water separator... you're a winter hunter. gheesh.

Further... 2 or 10 engines without a water sep. provides the same result.

Nice story Tod and it looks like a great day with the little one. Maybe I don't spend enough time at the shore but I have never seen horseshoe crabs in CT. Where were you. It's something I would like my kids to see.

Patrick,

They are common the western sound from the NY border to Milford (and beyond?). These were in norwalk.

One and done - as far as kids go.

You wouldn't want those wormy fillets anyway.

Gus looks to be interested in those giant prehistoric cockroaches. You and Jen have really stacked the deck there haven't you...

Water in the fuel line can wreck a day. I had a morning hunt killed by a few drops of water that settled in a low spot in the fuel line and then froze. You could squeeze the primer bulb but it stayed collapsed. To solve the problem we took the fittings off the fuel line and put the air compressor to one end to free the obstruction. An ice bullet shot out the end opposite the air compressor and dang near broke the garage door window.

Since I've never lived on the E. Coast... Is that a Blue Fish?

What you are missing! Pollution, congestion, etc...

The fish is a summer flounder. A mini halibut - a really big one is 10 pounds, that one was 5.5.

Thanks for the info and it explains why I've never seen one in CT. All my 'shore time' has been spent on the eastern end of the state - I have never ventured further west along the shore than the CT River.

One of these days I'll have to take a ride!
Thanks again,

Saw a show Saturday night and they had a little pontoon with what looked like twin 30's from the 80's or 90's.
