A couple hours in the Devlin

Unfortunately the stripers did not want to play this morning but it's always nice to be on the salt.

Tod - The fishing boat in the picture is definetly a "stick" boat or a harpoon boat. Back many years ago, it was common for harpoon boats to primarily go after swordfish. Here off of Cape Cod and in Maine, they really did not have to go that far "in the day"..

Now most of the stick boats are used to pursue Bluefin Tuna. It is a difficult, yet effective way to harvest Bluefin tuna. It must be a calm day.. and now most of these boats team with a plane, who finds the tuna school on the surface and guides the stick boat to the school.

Most swordfish are now caught on long lines. They actually had a reality show, staring Linda Greenlaw on long lines called "life on the line" showing how these boats set long (miles long) main lines between two buoys with a leader and baited hook (mackeral or Squid) and let it fish.. then haul back and see what ya caught.. this fishing method also catches Bluefin tuna, bigeye tuna, yellowfin tuna and Blue marlin, white marlin..

It is an effective way to fish, but somewhat controversial since many "by catch" fish are killed..

Just some interesting information....
