Nothing special because we have had no sun lately. I am so excited to put this new lens to work. Can't wait for some good lighting. Is it hunting season yet????? Thanks for looking

Gary,
Your killin me man. Great photos. After what you told me about that new lens, it should bag and dress out those birds for you.

Gary, they are some outstanding pics! Would you mind if I drew any of them? The geese with their reflection in the water is especially picturesque.........Kevin

TJentry-- My camera body is a Canon 40D and my new lens is thw Canon 300mm 2.8LIS

Kevin-- Yes you can, I would be honored. I would love to see it after you get done.

Thanks Gary. I am working on a portrait for a friend right now. Plus with the decoy making it may be awhile so I saved the pic............Kevin

Gary -

Nice pics. I'm trying to get an XSi with an EF 70-300 IS USM lens. As a beginner, I can't justify the higher end stuff with L glass that you and Hitch shoot. Do you think that rig would shoot some good pics of duck and wildlife?

Trip.

I'm not asking for the exact location, but I'm curious about the setting where you found these fowl. I'm interested in the mallard and wigeon on the stony shore . . . seems somewhat out of their element. Was it a park setting or in the wild?

To what lengths do you go to sneak up / hide / get there first / feed / etc in order to get in position to get the good pics?

I'm new to the game as well and have a limited opportunity (7 mos of winter and few ducks the other 5 mos) to refine my approach.

Thanks for sharing the great photos!

Tgentry -- I have seen some incredible shots over the last year or so with that combonation. The XSI is a great camera body. The other lens I would reccomend is the canon 100-400 4.5 to 5.6 IS. I have shot that lens for over two years now and love it. It has really served me well. Its a little spendy. I will post some pics for you tonight on birds in flight with that lens when I get home from work. For birding or wildlife most think 300mm is a little short. As you know I just shot these with my new 300mm. But already am feeling a little short in reach. I just purchased the 1.4 canon extender so I could get out to 420mm. Haven't used it yet. Can't wait for the weekend. Other than that I believe you are right on.

Hope this helps

Nick. Great question! I live on a lake in Spokane Washington. Its 20 miles long, and usually I shoot in-flight shots. I haven't had any open skys or light lately so I am stuck in my blind down on the lake in front of my house. The lake is at a 12 ft. draw down at this time and the waterfowl feed up the shoreline on the dead millfoil and mud ect. All my shots are taken in the wild. I do feed the quail here all winter so they wer eating with that shot I took. I am waiting for the arrival of the wood ducks. Should be here this week or next. Usually I have at least 25 prs. living around my place. In two years I have never got a good inflight pic of a woody. I should be able to with this new lense. Hope this helps. I leave my blind in the same location all year long, so the birds get used to it.

Not sure what lighting your looking for... Looks perfect to me... Overcast is always perfect, no harsh sunlight... one of these days I may even get my camera out for some nature photography... I just photograph people... and when I am done working I am sick of the camera and only take flyrods and guns into the filed... someday I'll take some time for nature photography... Great detail in your photo's... keep em coming...

FYI, I belive the Cannon 40D uses the DIGIC III image process, the effect increases the lens setting by 1.5x...

eg... a 300 mm lens become a 450mm lens... a 35mm lens becomes 52.5mm....

Hey Gary -

Great stuff and inspiration for us beginners.

I did get a good shot last saturday of a turkey vulture of all things but am having trouble getting the image dowm to 100 to post. I have set up for the last 6 weekends with my sneakboat and some decoys and am getting good practice trying to catch incomers and pan while increasing the magnification - harder than the 12 guage but just as much fun ! Only have a 55 -250 IS on my XS but hope to get the 100-400 used during the next year.

I really like the way you used the available light and the in flight shot of the geese is super. keep em coming !
