i like october
the parts that involve boats and birds and frost on my windshield
the red dog likes it too
my buddy mike likes it plenty
but he's got problems
a man torn:
between venison or antelope
elk or fish or fowl
all of the above in any given day is never far from the realm of possibility
I was able to get him out yesterday with the chance of smelling some gunsmoke
& seeing the red dog cast a bow wave
the possibility of even getting a few birds.
after last years first hunt we decided on taking off well after the sun was up and the fog was off the water
red dog was glad to see mike because he got some of his fried chicken on the way to the launch
we got the boat started and were on our way into the big water
we went to the chosen location and deployed our decoys
after hunting with mike for so long we have developed a "system"
i run the boat and drop him, the deeks and gear off on the bank
he throws out the decoys
i take the boat and ditch it in the weeds and the sloughs on the marge and usually take a really long time slogging through the marsh on the way back
so that he has all of the decoys set up by the time i get there
he always does a good job
i usually get the boat stuck
but
today we did ok
we were able to cool the red dogs jets some with some fetching
some of the decoys were piflicated and upon further examination, mike indicated that they were "rattlers"
red dog did not understand what that meant
mike said,
"look Red, all you need to know is that rattlers are sinkers, and when "squozen", become piddlers"
Mike was showing and example of a "squozen" deek and we had a drake pinner land in the set
i shot and missed
mike connected
the red dog did what he does when i am either missing birds or hiding the boat
and mike is setting deeks and unloading gear
Mike was glad to anchor a nice drake pinner
the red dog wanted to eat it and roll on it and play with it all at once
things were slowing down, so I took a walk with the red dog and we managed to scratch down 4 birds just jump shooting
it is hard to wade through marsh mud in regular boot chest waders that are about 3 sizes too big, because each time you go to pull your foot up out of the muck, it is as though you and your waders are totally separate entities.
we made our way back to mike and the blind with our birds and our sweat soaked gear
we decided to take advantage of a change in the lighting and gunned out of a different spot than we usually do
we managed to swat down a few more birds and the red dog had a chance to swim all he wanted
he catches the light pretty well in photos
A good fetch on a great day in the best place on earth
what more could anyone ask?
oh, a corned dog!
