A little chilly this morning

-29 air temp and there is a good wind to boot. Work for most was cancelled and many places closed. Not for me though so off to work I go.

Coldest I have been in was -39 in Blackduck MN. Friends Dads funeral many years back. It was a military funeral and those soldiers stood outside in their uniforms with no coats and thin gloves. Don?t know how they did it

minus 21 actual here in central Iowa this a.m. but the wind was down to 14/15 mph as compared to last night at 40+ this afternoon the wind laid down and it was minus 8. it felt pretty balmy [cool]

I have hunted in -8 and it wasn't pleasant for one skinny second.

Have jostled around in plenty cooler. It always amazes me how livestock and horses can roll with the temps down into the -40s in the Gunny basin.

I hunted in -13 last December on Lake Champlain ,never got above -6 . we sat out there for 6 hours one bird shy of our limit. My lab Quinn had my duster on and sitting on a foam board, tough girl

Coldest stretch for me in the Adirondacks ,1979, 2 weeks in Feb never hit zero with -40's at night the worst was -52 driving a 69 VW no heat , oh to be young

Well, it's making ice for fishing. I love hearing the lake sing at night.

I remember that cold snap, I was in Presque Isle, ME at the time. We left the cars running in the parking lot at night to prevent the block from freezing. Some found fun and creative ways to enjoy the cold, most notably by making a snow dam across US Route 1 and opening a fire hydrant on it. The town crew was not amused. Buddies filled the Dean for Academic Affairs (read vice-principal for discipline) VW with snow, pushed it to the top of a snowdrift and hit 'er with a hose. Sometime during that winter I was driving a back road and spotted a skunk standing by the side of the road. I stopped to avoid a confrontation but he refused to move, so I pulled up. He was frozen solid in a standing position, his head cocked a little to one side, one paw lifted slightly off the ground as if he was in motion when he froze. I've never figured out how that happened, I can't believe he really froze mid stride. Forty long years ago in a few days.

Jan. 31st now. In Shell Rock this morning it is negative 29 degrees. Forecast calls for it to stay below zero all day. Tomorrows high predicted to be 17 degrees but by Sunday the high will be a balmy 48 degrees, tee shirt weather. [;)]

In contrast, it's 74 in Benito Juarez, Argentina now. Nine in Dover. Lied through some bitter cold in Oswego, and do not miss it.
Ok conundrum fans, What temp is the same for F as for C?

When lived in Crookston, MN it hit -33. That was part of a ten day stretch where the warmest it got was -10. The wind quit blowing and the sun was out so we went grouse hunting at -10. The grouse were roosted in the snow. It was fun to watch the dog work the birds.

I could always tell when the temps were below -20. I would let my dog out and he would always keep one foot in the air when it was that cold.

-40. Which is also the temp at which a fully charged lead acid battery will freeze.

Which reminds me,,,,,,, I need to hook up a charger to my ATV battery just to keep it warmed a bit. (weak batty at best). Also have a truly dead battery sitting in the back of my pickup, hope it hasn't leaked onto my aluminum truck bed.

Ranger buddy of mine found a guy who got lost in the dacks, fell thru the ice crossing a brook . Found him on the far bank frozen dead in his levi's. I don't mind the cold ,it's when the dang blasted wind howls with it that really gets to me.. I built the first steel hanger in Lake clear back in the early 80's , our wool would stick to the steel at -35 . But the guy I was working with was the true badass. He would cross country ski 3 miles from his camp to the airport in that weather. Feb 1st is tomorrow, our winter carnival starts Saturday and before I know it it will be March
