A Little FB Rant

I rarely post on FB and it seems like when I do I'm always reminded of one of the things that galls me about their groups. Someone posted a question about an issue they are having with calls they make. As I read the responses saw nobody covered the root cause. A few were reasonable suggestions and some were just bad advice, but something was still missing so I provided some info that would help. It was a direct response to the question. Crickets..... It galls the shit out of me when you take time to respond to someone directly and they don't acknowledge your help. That's the problem with a lot of FB group participants. They are ingrates whose participation is only one of "fix my problem" or "answer my question" without the common courtesy of a simple "thanks" when you offer your time and assistance.

I hope you guys can build this forum and recruit some folks who will contribute and grow the community because I like making duck calls and collecting vintage ones. I want to see more of this content on a daily basis and FB groups just lack too much in the way of community and courteousness. Too many ingrates and transients. Whenever I post on FB I instantly regret wasting my time because you only have so much time in a day and there are more appreciative people here.

There’s been a new generation of “call makers” that I have found want an immediate solution to whatever their issue may be on their call. Whether that be a sticking issue or no rasp or too much rasp. They don’t want hints as to where to look or so help me you just tell them to make small changes along the tone board and see what happens and WRITE IT DOWN to learn. Instant gratification to be able to sell and be the next Josh Raggio is what I feel they want. Learn the trade. It’s so much more gratifying. Just my 2 pennies.

Really glad to see you here, Kent! Hope you'll find this site and its members interesting enough to keep coming.

For those who don't know, Kent is, in my opinion, one of the finest call makers in this generation. I think his calls sound better than just about any out there - and there is some stiff competition these days.

Thanks Henry I love everything involved in building calls to fool wildlife. I’m humbled by your statement with the talent that’s out there. Haven’t had time to start looking around but will soon after a busy week and weekend coming up. Thanks for the invite.

Kent

Thanks for joining this community. Please spread the word we have an active community of craftsman and artisans who use our craft for duck hunting. We want to recruit more people who enjoy shop time when it isn't hunting season.

@Kent W Eason so glad you are here sir! Hows the little call shop coming along? Hope all the family is doing well! Its an absolute pleasure to see you here. Cant wait to see some of the work you post up as I feel you put out one of the best calls right now. Absolutely love my Lagniappe and it still sits on the lanyard today.

This is going to be a great forum. I will pass the word around and hope to see it grow.

I am constantly learning something new with each call build. The aha moments are awesome. Figuring something out for the first time, whether it be improvements through experimentation, or accidental discoveries, that's what it's all about for me. There are folks out there with no interest in any of that. Their frustration gets the better of them. IMHO they loose sight of the true prize. I think the days of "apprenticeship" are fading but I have faith that the call making community will always have a strong foundation at it's core. There is nothing more satisfying than helping a fellow call maker who truly appreciates and respects your time. Kent gave me a great tip on stippling, it was awesome. Thanks @Kent W Eason !!

I've gotten to the point where I rarely reply to Facebook posts any more regarding carving or call making.

Most of the time people want a "atta boy" and not any real constructive criticism.

Often they are not competent enough to know when they are being given good advice.

I've never made a duck call but I do make lots of Turkey Calls. So I will be enjoying reading up in this new section.

New project coming up next year is turning a Turkey Call trumpet.

I've done lots of pot calls, but I've been wanting to make a trumpet for myself quite some time.

Jode, what is a turkey call trumpet? Is that like the wing bone calls? My brother had one of those and he was not good at it lol.

It's similar in designed concept to a wing bone. But is actually made from a turned piece of wood with a turned mouthpiece.

They've been made for a long time and they take a high degree of skill to pull off correctly. Photo is not mine, but it gives you an example.

I don't blame you. When giving advice and helping becomes a source of frustration it might be time to stop.

I've never seen a trumpet call in person. You'll have to show us how one gets made.

I’m convinced that Facebook is for seeing what folks are up to and picking fights with strangers. Nothing else. And they like fights with strangers more than keeping up with family and friends because it gets more clicks.

I won't argue that. I found two uses for FB. Getting in touch with classmates/fraternity brothers I'd lost contact with over the decades, and Marketplace. Marketplace has proven to be quite irritating, like the rest of FB.
