A man's attitude reflected in a dog

Well it's the first true "ducky" day today and I am frantically wrapping up month end reports so I can prep the turkey and pork loin for tomorrow and get out this evening.

Next week I am traveling to KS with my old college roommate. We will be primarily focused on roosters, but there's always time for ducks. It's been a year since I've done any real upland training; with a new house, second son, heavy workload, blah blah blah... I figured the dog and I should knock the rust off before we head out of state and embarass ourselves.

A few days ago we hit a cattail spot I have had success in the past. After 4 hours in the cattails and going over each of my 10" boots twice; we had what we came for. Tired and with wet feet, I snapped a picture and we headed home.

Today we got out to a different spot. After 11 minutes and hardly even warmed up; we had what we came for. Happy and ready for Kansas, I snapped a picture and we headed home.

Pete -
I appreciate the offer, but we'll be about 1.5 hours NE of you in Tipton.

My only question is; if you were bringing 8-10 decoys for small walk-in hunts. What species would they be.

Hank, I would think the best would be mallards. I haven't seen any mallards but this late in the season they have to be coming down soon. I have seen a couple reports of a new influx of mallards up in that section of the state.

Beautiful pictures, Hank. Your pup looks to be an outstanding lab. I liked your title for this thread.

Great photos! It's common knowledge that Kansas pheasants taste better than Indiana "warm up" birds, so just send them up this way and I'll free you up some freezer space!

Hi Hank ... That's a nice brace of roosters that many, many Kansas hunters would be proud to display -- especially this year. I know, there's "never a discouraging word" in this Land of Oz, but this is a down year for pheasants ... Don't mean to be too discouraging, there are some good pockets of birds out there, but it's going to take some work ...

Steve - Unfortunately, I am aware of the pheasants' situation in KS this year. While it us nice to bring home "some bacon". These types of trips are more about unwinding, and a little bourbon; than they are about the tailgate shots.

Hank,
Thanks for posting up,nice looking pup it is obvious he had a good time. I like your vintage browning more and more i appreciate a plain barrel as opposed to a rib.
Good luck in Kansas.
Bill.

Chris....I'm with you on that A5! They look just as classical as an old side by side. One of these days I'm going to try and find a 3inch mag.
