to Steve McCullough for a fantastic time spent layout gunning.
Ronnie Ladd and I drove up to Kentucky right before the New Year's holiday to try and shoot a few divers with Doc McCullough, Kristan Sacharnowski, and Jeff King. We had intended a full-blown MALARKY hunt, but it didn't work out, and only the five of us were there. Once again I was the trip jinx - not only did I start getting the sinus "crud" that's been going around, but it was 60 degrees with no wind for the two days we hunted. Only 9 birds, but another memorable trip. Bobbing around in a layout boat sick is better than laying in bed sick, but you'll pay for it later...trust me.
The food and accomodations were incredible - stayed at a "cabin" on one of the lakes, and it was "grunt and scratch" - fest. No wimmens allowed in the clubhouse! Except at Saturday night supper...
If you get the chance to hunt with Doc out of the "Dos Gris", don't think twice; just ask when you need to be there. Probably fifteen different carvers are represented in his rig, and Doc busted his ass to give us every chance to get into birds. I was lucky enough to be in one of the boxes when two bluebills strafed the rig; the lead bird broke left, perfect for Doc, and I smacked the tail-end bird breaking right (I'm left-handed). I actually dumped my bird, turned to the left, and watched as Steve raised his gun and dumped the other 'bill with a single shot.
I got lucky enough to get into some greaters this weekend here in Arkansas, but it wasn't the same shooting from shore as it would have been watching them bore down on the layout boat.
