About ducks and pups

Our season opened on Saturday Sept. 12th. I was up at 3:30AM with no need of the alarm at all. While getting ready I opted to take a picture of Habanero who was being patient about having her pups. She knew I was going duck hunting.

I had stopped at the pond I was hunting the day before and had seen no ducks so I didn't quite know what to expect on the opener.

I set out four decoys along with the 3 my friend has in the pond all year long.

Chipotle was sitting right behind me and to my left a little. We were on a small island on the northeast side of the pond. I had found out last year that most of the ducks, when there, will fly out heading from west to east and then angling towards the south. I can't begin to tell you much I appreciated Habi teaching Chip how to sit. He knew exactly what I expected out of him.

While we sat there I noticed some ducks swimming towards us and it happened to be a small flock of bluewings. As is so typical of them, they got up and left for their feeding area about 8 minutes before our season opened. They flew right past us and close. As it got lighter I decided to take this picture.

Then after all the ducks were out of the pond area I had a small mixed flock of bwts and gwts swing back in and I was able to dump two gwts. My partner was out after the first one when I took these two shots of him. I finished the morning in a flurry by taking 3 gwts and 3 bwts. Actually, one of the bwts was a cinnamon drake. I checked his eyes and they were red not brown like the bwts have.

I got home around 9:30AM in time to listen to Bev tell me all about Habi and all the heavy panting she had been going through. Heck, I thought she wouldn't have her litter for another 5 days. I took her temp and it read 99.3F. That told me all I needed to know.

It was 9:45PM when her first pup was born and at 1:35AM on Sunday she gave birth to #6, which happened to be the last one in the litter. I can't begin to tell you how exhausted I was. I stuck it out for another half hour and crashed at 2AM.

Funny what a guy will do when duck season starts. I was up 2 hours later at 4AM, got the coffee going and headed back to the pond for another day of teal season. I can't help it that I am a duck hunter. I did pay for it later, however.

Good stuff! Hard to beat a limit of teal AND new puppies! Give mom a milkbone on me!

Al, great post and photos. Thanks for sharing. You probably looked just like that little one, flat on your back, after the second days hunt on 2 hours sleep.

Best - Paul

Al, these posts you make about labs and small water hunting..get me wishing I could head west just a bit and join you for a hunt! I am probably the closest member board member to you.
Hard to beat western skies!

Deb picked one out right away- the one sleeping w/ all 4 in the air just like our two we have now. They sure can make it look easy and relaxing. Pups sure can steal your heart but right now I am happy with a couple middle aged ones that have us well trained. ;-0

Looks like a nice start to the teal season Al. Tomorrow starts FL's early teal season and today really felt like fall is coming with the temps down in the low 70s and a light breeze and hardly any humidity. Makes me very excited for duck season....

Carl, just wanted you to know that Habi loved the milk bone. I always carry a box of them with me in the truck when duck season is here. She has had a hard time of it staying in the house when teal season is here.

Hi Paul,
It was my loud snoring that drove my poor wife nuts when I fell asleep on Sunday afternoon. Good that it is behind me now. Not good timing at all.

Jack, the older I get the more I appreciate small water. I much prefer it even to hunting the Rio Grande. Speaking of that----it has been flat lining it for the past week now. Drier than a corn cob. Doesn't look good around here at all.
What part of our great country do you live in? I wished that I had my camera last evening when Bev and I were coming home from seeing a movie. The sunset was beyond your imagination.
Al

Thanks so much. It was a great day to hunt teal other than some typical warm temps of 92F later on that day. Makes you get your birds cleaned and in a timely fashion.

Hey, Tom. I do understand about smiling when talking about middle aged dogs. No cleaning up to do around the house, mainly. I am glad that Deb liked that shot. Pups do that a lot and it is fun trying to take those pics. Getting closer to your opener. Best of luck back home.

You are most welcomed, Keith. I'm listening to the little buggers nursing right now as I type this. I can't help but smile. Today is our last day of the season so in one hour I will be heading out.
Al

Hi Dani. I was just thinking that your season is now open since it is 6:21AM your time. Best of luck to you. I'll look forward to a report. Glad to hear that it will be cool for you. Our temps have been in the 80sF earlier than I care for them to be while hunting.

Yup season is indeed open and instead of sitting in the swamp watching for wood ducks I am sitting at work in front of my microscope .......working......ick.......

BUT I'll get the majority of my work week out of the way this weekend and then Tuesday afternoon I am flying to Spokane with my black dog and we'll meet Steve there and then from there we head to Montana for sage grouse hunting. Later we'll head to SD for prairie chickens. Sooooooooooo at least I have a good reason for missing my first teal season since I started duck hunting

But when I stepped outside today it was indeed very nice and I was thinking the folk in the swamps should be pretty happy if they get done early since it's supposed to warm up to the 90s this weekend...
