I was thinking about getting a more powerful air rifle for killing grouse and maybe rabbits. The one Mac has was 350 fps when new,(Daisy Grizzly) but we need one with more jam. I saw at Canadian Tire that 1. they don't have any that are more than 495 fps and 2. they are over $200! What the heck? A used Cooey .22 is only $100!

I wanted an air gun because the kids could still hunt small stuff with it around camp when we're serious hunting and trying to be quiet . Do co2 guns have more nuts?

I think Joes right on the money with Gamo Mike. And I think if you search around the
price is real right for the performance available. Also they do some packages that
really work well.
 
Gamo, Diana/RWS are the 2 names I'd recomend The Gamo's that claim 1200 fps do so by useing some special ammo but many in .177 will get an honest 1000fps. I have a RWS model 34 that I use for trigger control practice and pest control. For seriouse hunting I'd probably recommend the .22 they're slower at 750-800 fps but create a bigger wound channel. It doesn't seem to matter much with bunnies but it makes a huge difference on the feral ditch tigers. Also If you scope it be sure to use a scope that states it is rated for air rifles. the bi-directional recoil these powerfull spring piston air rifles create will destroy even the best non air rifle scope in short order. BSA scpes are all air rifle rated. Gods honest truth I wrecked 2 leopolds before finding that out.
 
I have a .177 RWS 34 too. I chronoed it and it was 795fps. It will kill a squirrel faster than a .22 long rifle and that is through the lungs. My wife killed a couple rabbits with a Daisy powerline pistol that I've had for almost 30 years. It is a target pistol that has a side lever for cocking. It is super accurate and I am up to 30 bats at the lumberyard. It shoots about 300 fps. The things are shitting on everything and won't use the 6 houses we built for them...hate to do it but a sheet of 3/4 oak plywood is pushing 70 bucks. As for a CO2...don't...Those things mess up seals, are expensive to shoot and cost more than they are worth. Plus, the kids will shoot up 10 bucks worth of powerlets in an hour and be out of business. A barrel break spring air is what to get. I got the grandson one from a big online store for less than 50 bucks that had a scope..took the scope off right away and the safety doesn't work but that thing kills squirrels easily at 30 yards and is plenty accurate.It's not a 300 dollar RWS by any stretch of the imagination but it fits him and doesn't weigh 8lbs like my RWS. Eric is right on about the scope, get a 50 dollar BSA 4 power and save a 900 dollar Leupold.
 
Mike, Check out Daisy and Crosman air rifle lines. They have rifles that will pump up to the 725 (Crosman) to 800 fps (Daisy) range for under $100 US. They are certainly not the RWS level of gun but they are a third of the price. I do like my RWS for serious practice but for the kids? Actually you may have problems I've pasted in the Crosman write-up for the model 2100B - Check out the "Avaiable in Canada" comment.

Thanks guys. I checked the Can Firearms Center website and found out that air rifles are limited to under 500 fps here. I wasn't clear on whether I'd have to register one that was more powerful or if they are restricted. I have to call them today and find out.

1000 fps would be sweet!

A pump up would be great for Mac, it would build up his muscles quick because we all know...3 pumps ain't gonna cut it. I have two Benjamins that need fixed....they chronoed faster than my RWS 34!

That stinks you are limited to 495fps. In that case I'd look at CCI's CB .22 ammo. It is quiet and slow with more punch than most high velocity air guns. CB ammo will work well on bunnies and grouse for sure. Need a well placed shot on feral cats, about the top end of the size range for CB ammo. It is made in both short and long chamberings.

If you need/want to stay with an airgun I'd suggest a 22 for sure. The more lead the better at slow speed.

Those CB shorts are quieter than a lot of air rifles. One of my guys here keeps the cat,coon and possum population in check with them and he lives in town.

Im my quick read the only thing to add is that the top of the line spring air guns are very loud. You would be better off with a .22 with cb caps if quiet is a prioroty.
 
High velocity = noisy.

High velocity air guns, like Gamos, are loud because the projectile is on the edge of breaking the sound barrier. Back in the day I had "walk out the door" rights with a BB gun when I was six years old (other country neighbor kids were walking around with 22s. This was in spite of the fact that I had an uncle, my Mom's brother, who was blind in one eye from a BB gun accident.

I'd go with a pump up pellet gun to at least get them to think about pulling the trigger. A CO2 gun makes it a bit to easy to throw out a lot of ammo.
