Hey Jack,
Your going to sell off some local LI history?
Did you know that DU had a project dedicated as the "Al McCormack project"?
I was doing some island hopping, working my dog in some of the thickest brush I could find and come across a broken down DEC sign that was put up some years ago on the middle of this overgrown island in the Great South Bay.
Turns out, Ducks Unlimited first local project was to restore a man-made island in Great South Bay that had been created from dredge spoil left over from years of navigational dredging. Grass Island had become ecologically useless to migrating wildfowl, even though it was located in the Atlantic flyway. With a profile over 20-feet high, it had been overtaken by phragmites and other invading plant species. They named it "Al McCormack project".
I never knew about this. My brother and I plan to go back soon and repair the sign even though no one can see it. Just seems like the right thing to do. When we go back we will bring the machetes to cut our way in. It was a real pita to get in there.
