All You Duck Call Makers

Let's see the tools of your trade. I'm curious in your lathe set ups and woodturning tools you use including mandrels, etc. I was piddling around last night on my Oliver and now I'm bleery eyed. Before I knew it the time was 2:00 a.m.. Turning sure does make the hours pass. Finally got a bench grinder so I can sharpen my tools but am having to free hand them until I order some sharpening jigs and supplies. I'd love to see how others approach this pastime.

heres my old stuff eric. My new mandrel I use is one I purchased it has #2mt on one end and brass knurled ont he other and a screw that when you put your blank on you snug it to hold the drilled blank on the mandrel. works good but it sure could use a draw bar sometimes if i have no tail support it will come loose on me if i did not seat it with a deadblow.

I also picked up a wood turners chuck from woodcraft and use a 1/4" steel rod in it for the inserts works goodenuf. will take some other pics latter on. Get a good set of mid size or mini tools come in handy.

all my stuff is put up right now (very limited space) but I used to just use a wood lathe then I bought the mandrel kit form Huts products.com , man does that make it easier :)

It gets addicting quick. Here's a link to a few pictures of what I do; http://www.chamberlincalls.com/How%20they're%20made..htm

I'd think about taking those grinding wheels off and use that Baldor, assuming its slow speed, with Beal buffing wheels. does a great job of bufffing and waxing your calls. A good wet sharpening system for your tools such as the Tormek is the way to go in sharpening, plus it makes your wife happy keeping all the household knives sharp.

Good luck with it. Jim

Eric,
This is the only picture I have of my lathe set up. That is a blind mandrel in a four jaw chuck on the head stock in the picture. If you look on the bench to the left you can see my mandrel that a machinist buddy made for me. It works like Daves and I had to go back and get him to thread it for a draw bar for the same reason Dave mentioned. Send me a message if you want to come over and see how I do it. I am helping Brian Saturday with his landscaping project but should be free Sunday afternoon. Shawn P.S. I have a new jig on the way so I could make you a race horse deal on the jig I have been using.

Dave, great tutorial for the beginner. Thanks for posting that.

Robert, I checked that site out. Looks like they have some good stuff for callmaking. Thanks.

Jim, the gray grinding wheels are history (excpet for maybe the lawnmower blade) as soon as I can order some suited for sharpening woodtruning tools, e.g. white, pink, blue ones. I'm also getting/making some jigs to help put a good clean edge on my tools.

Shawn, be on the lookout. I'll call you soon.

Great input fellas. Thanks.
