what is this? And before folk start getting smart....I KNOW it's a DUCK....hahahahahahaha

but is it a "park duck" a cross breed of some sort? A true species? And if so, which one?

This bird was at our pond here at work and one of the guys was asking what it was.

Thanks a lot in advance

Well seeing it is on a very green lawn....and my lawn still has 12 inches of snow covering it.......

I am not sure if it is a cross.....has me stumped....maybe a melanistic phase of what?????

I looked in one data base I have and noted a reference that melanisim is rare in quakers (darn old reference)

Melanism in North American Birds, Alfred O. Gross. Bird-Banding, Vol. 36, No. 4 (Oct., 1965), pp. 240-242

Maybe Steve will ID the critter

The Muscovy (Cairina moschata) x Mallard (Anas platyrhyncos) is an inter-species hybrid.

It might be a quacker.
take care and God Bless
Eddie.
Its all about Building that Bond

Maybe some Cayuga mixed in with a mallard? Look up Cayugas on Google...they were supposedly developed from a captured pair of black ducks.

It would be too oddball, but also has some character in the head/neck of Indian Runner...again, from Google.

That is one mixed up bird...chances are it's so crossed, you'll never know for sure...

Then again, maybe it's a melanistic mallard, black or mottled etc. Black eyes and black bill is peculiar.

There is something strangely alluring about the "things to do with your Cayuga" photo at that link.

Sorry Dani....just sayin'.

I think I'd have to agree with Rick, too. Love watching Indian Runners... funny birds when they're getting wrangled up by a Border Collie.

I see a green tinge on that black head. I'm guessing mallard (reverse albino?). Either that or a cross between a republican mallard and democrat black duck. Maybe that is why the two parties ALWAYS oppose what the other does - look at the result when they mingle.

Its a park duck, but almost classic all muscovy duck. The bill looks like some mallard genes are being expressed, so I'll have to agree with my colleague Clint that it is a mullard.

I figured you would have a definitive answer by now.

So... no.1 It's a black duck
no. 2 It's the ugly duckling and will turn into a beautiful swan when it grows up.....
