Aluminum/Rustoleum/wet on wet

Another aluminum boat question.

I actually have a gallon of automotive etch primer (I understand surface prep & have had modest success painting couple IH Scout IIs in my driveway) & want to use inexpensive Rustoleum products. Also have a couple Harbor Freight cheap paint guns & a compressor.

Painting a car w/modern Urethane based paint you can go from etch primer to primer to single stage finish coat in one day if temps are right.

Can I do the same with Rustoleum waiting for etch primer to get dry to touch? Then prime w/Rustoleum primer & top coat that w/Rustoleum satin black (Rustoleum gloss black dulls up pretty darn fast too) just waiting for the primer to tack dry? THEN apply camo pattern w/rattlecan primer.

The etch primers that I used for my boats in the past required a couple hours to flash then was ready for top coat or primer.
The Rustoleum products will have the use instructions and time required for top coating listed on the can or website.

Gary,
run a test on a small panel.
I have had two bad experiences with the Rustoleum paint in spray bombs. It does not tolerate over coating at all.

I dont use their primer for work so I cant say. But test the whole finnish from the beginning to end on a small section or scrap to be sure.

Unless I'm doing a quick & dirty (like a "honey do" project under duress) I avoid spray bomb/rattle can paint. It seldom holds up.

We have had very good results with the engine OEM paint and the Old Tempo Line. A lot of solids. No runs. Over coat with no problems and good shine for cast iron engine parts.
But a gun is sure nice for big jobs.
The rustoleum I had a problem on was a repaint my son and I did on his first bike. Went in with the trim colors too soon and the stuff just ate the under layer off the well prepped first coats.

Bummer to have to start over for sure.

Try to do a test for all prep and paint if the system is not a known product now to avoid the hart break.

If the top coat Rustoleum ate thru/curled the primer they were not compatable paints.

You can't use inexpensive "equipment" paint like John Deere Blitz Black (for a Rat Rod look) over 2K high build up urethane primers or you will have the same problem.

I'm talking about using Rustoleum Satin Black over Rustoleum red primer. Not any of their, or other company, rattle can products.

Gary, I have used duplicolor self etching primer from autozone followed by rustoleum camo. it workrd well on my war eagle. it is not the most durable, but touch up is very easy.

tgentry - I assume the duplicolor was in a rattlecan.

A BB I look at for automotive painting info is www.autobodystore.com.

You comment about easy touch up is relevant. An aluminum boat doesn't NEED paint anyway.

Hi Gary. yes it was a rattle can. I cleaned the whole boat very well. my brother owns a tanker truck wash out operation and i used his alumibrite on their hi pressure hot water guns. it cleaned everything and does a bit of etching as well if you let it set on for a while. it would be equivalent to scotchbrite pads on the bare metal. then i painted the boat with the primer. the next day i hit it with my camo rustoleum pattern. every now and then i do some touch up as i am not easy on my boat. let me know if you have any other questions. Trip.

Gary,
the rusoleum Black Gloss ate the rustoleum gloss yellow that was the base color. It says on the can specifically about recoat times and for us it did not work well when we didnt stay in their window.

As I said we have very good and forgiving results with other paint brands at work. Have to or we wouldn't use them. Nothing needs a good coating of paint for protection that a set of cast iron engine manifolds on a v8 that lives in salt water.

Fast drying Rustoleum rattlecan paint strikes me as much like laquer - delicate.

Automotive & marine paints have catalysts/driers/pot life involved. More complicated than rattlecan but more durable. I have an inexpensive Sears compressor & cheap home depot paint guns, but I've had minimal adhesion issues with my back yard paint jobs.
