Hey there, I'm looking for an American Oystercatcher pattern for carving/reference. Was curious if anyone could point me to a source.

Nate -- the pattern books of Anthony Hillman and Harry V. Shourds published by Dover don't get a lot of love, but the one entitled "Carving Shorebirds--With Full-Size Patterns" (Dover, 1978, ISBN0-486-24287) does have a serviceable American Oystercatcher as Plate #1.

It's been some years since you and I sat in Brettell's shop and carved a surf scoter in one of Steve's classes. Greetings from Buzzard's Bay.
 
Hey, thanks Jay. Yes, it has been some years. I hope you are doing well. Thanks for the tip on the pattern. I will have to search for that book. I think I have one or two of Hillman's other pattern books, except for that one.

The pattern book already mentioned has been very useful for me over many year.

I have never copied and carved the patterns, but they are very good reference for making your own patterns.

The pattern book, and authors do not get the credit that they deserve.

Even though I have a wealth of shorebird reference material. I still check the Shourds & Hillman pattern book, and Shorebirds A Complete Guide To Their Behavior And Migration by Alan Richards.

Pretty country, Matt. I'm west of you, on Slocum's River about two miles north of the mouth. And the mouth of Slocum's is pretty much due north of Cuttyhunk. Stripers Online, a fishing board I look in on, has an option field for members under their avatars to share their general location. Comes in handy, and reading here, I sometimes wish I had a better bead on where folks are writing from. A thought for Mr. Patterson from a long-time lurker. . .

So, you live in the Buzzards Bay Region, not the village of Buzzards Bay. That area has changed a lot since I lived there 45 years ago. Many fond outdoor memories though.

I agree on your avatar comment, as I often find myself wondering where folks are from.

Plate 4 of the painting book has a side and top view of an American Oystercatcher, seem good enough for a pattern; Abebooks has the carving book, also the painting book, for sale 'round $15. Good quality colour, printing, as others said, a source underestimated.
