I gave my Remington 11-87 20 ga shotgun to my local gunsmith.I wanted the receiver drilled and tapped so I could put a scope on it.They drilled and tapped the receiver but the bolt will not go all the way forward so the gun cant be fired. The gunsmith told me the bolts aren't to long. They have had the gun for 3 months now.He said he ordered some parts but still hasn't told me what he screwed up.

My question to you is WHAT could he have done to cause this ?

Thanks Guys

Bob, sounds like long screws. Might have tapped into the bolt locking void in the receiver. Do you have the gun? Should be easy to remedy. Where are you located? I'm out east.

Hey Rich
Definitely not long screws....they checked. I dont have the gun they said they are still working on it.I cant imagine how they screwed up such an easy job.

Thanks

Bob Are you planing on using it for deer hunting, You should've bought a Remington fully rifled cantilever barrel. The receivers are thin and drilling will weaken it. I bought 2 for the boys at Cabela's that came with scope & rings.A friend had his 12 ga. drilled and it has cracked near hole.

If I'm not mistaken, B Square makes a scope mount that fits over the recievers of 1187s that don't require any drilling or tapping

Cantilver is the way to go Bob! I leave my scope on the barrel and switch out barrels for deer and turkey...

well I just bought a Remington 870 20ga fully rifled cantilever barrel BUT get back to the topic guys...LMAO
Im now stuck with a gun that they screwed up and I dont know how.

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd start with the simiplest. If the screws aren't to long, then I'd make sure that there is no metal shaving from drill and tapping that are in the way. I've had the smallest piece of grass and even snow while goose huning in a snow storm get in the way of the bolt. A little CLP Breakfree and good to go. If all they did was drill and tap, they couldn't have done much to it.

Im thinking they sqeezed it to tight in the gun vise Kevin..I think they bent something.....they said they ordered new parts so it doesnt have anything to do with being clean. It was the perfect 20 ga until they got it.

Thanks

Bob,
Receiver being crused is probable, also screw in top pushing down on the barrel causing the bolt
to bind.
Also receiver is thin at the front screws and unless he is good it will strip out anyway.
Have been doing this mod for over 40 years and the 1100 receiver can be a tough one.
Thanks
Ken

I've been shooting 870s/1100s/11-87s for many years. There are only two things I can think of, and crushing the receiver in a vise is one of them. The other is the recess machined into the top of the receiver that the locking block lug fits into when the bolt locks into battery. If they drilled into that recess, a burred hole or screw protruding into the recess would prevent the bolt from locking into battery. The bolt needs to be essentially all the way forward for that to happen. If it is stopping sooner, I'd venture to say they literally bent the sides of the receiver in, causing the action bar assembly that the bolt rides on to bind in the receiver.

Bob ,

Either the screws are to long or there is a heck of a burr where he drill through , the fact that he keeps making excues would worry me , can you check to see if the screws are sticking out then you need to take the screw out and try to cycle the gun . Just me .02

Thanks Guys
I will try to get SOME answers next week.I got worried when he said he was ordering some new parts.
This is driving me nuts because it was a GREAT gun.The gun NEVER jammed and was a great upland/waterfowl gun for many many years.

Best
Bob
