Our trip plans have changed and we are heading back to CT from WA via the northern states, rather than going to AZ. SD seems the best bet for me since in SD squaretails are open along with huns, sharptails and pheasants. The season will be closed in KS and ipheasants and huns would be closed although chickens woudl be open in NE.

Anyone got info or a good contact?

Tod, not to hijack your thread,,, It was good to meet you last week, hope you had a good time at camp, sorry I missed you when you came back Monday, I was going to fill your cooler with elk steaks for the trip back east.

Hope you have a safe and successful trip back home.

The last time I chased those bastards I was in NW Kansas at the edge of their range. I don't think I ever got closer than an 1/4 mile. That was the morning that I was awoken by a strange squeeking sound. After breakfast we drove to find it. Five miles away we found it...it was a wornout old windmill with a little fence around it and the chickens were feeding under it. I don't think we even got the truck cap open before they were gone to the next hilltop. The next time I saw one was a week later down the road from Glen Elder. I shot so many ducks on that trip that I was eating mallard breast like apples to keep up on my posession.

Not sure when you're coming by my place but ducks and geese open on the 18th and we are COVERED.

Tod,
The Ft. Pierre National Grassland south of Pierre has about 115,000 acres of short grass prairie that is probably some of the best prairie chicken hunting in the country. It is administered by the USFS through Chadron, NE but there is a district ranger office in Pierre. Google them up for the address and phone number. You can order maps online but I bet they might have some maps at the Pierre office.

Yep, I know some mighty fine spots for pheseant. They say that the Redfield area is sopposed to be the pheseant capital, I live about 30 miles east of there and from what I have seen would have to agree. I oldest son went on the youth opener last week and limited out his first time hunting pheseants!!!! If you need some info pm me. I am currenbtly on my way home from overseas so it will be a day or two before I get back to you. 15 Oct is opening day. Have a good one

Pete
