Any secrets to getting paint to stick to stainless steel?

I found some big stainless steel handles for my boat, but not sure if paint will stick to them over time. Any ideas?

Oh, and flip over day is coming. Anyone wanting to come and help is more than welcome, probably cold beer and maybe brats.

Andrew

Lee, you come over and help flip, I will even make you deep fried cheese curds.

Heck, don't tell anyone but I will also pull out of the freezer a rhubarb pie, that I have been saving.

Blast them if you can, or abrade them very well... I have found using a brass wire wheel works OK. If you use a steel wire wheel the SS will start to rust. I think the steel from the wire wheel embeds in the SS.

If I was within 2 hours..I'd come over and do it for the beer...if you can wait till mid Oct. , I'll be close on a hunt with Pete McMiller.

We have a primer designed for Aluminum, Galvanized & Stainless ($35/quart). Abrade and prime and then paint. Or.....just abrade and paint.....often. :) Lou

Brats my A$$!!!!

for a boat that big I would expect to have tenderloins or porterhouses or something...Brats? sheesh, this is not a tailgate man, this is a celebration!!!

Lee is right, cheesecurds too...

Will you have it ready by Mid oct for the Lee to help?

"for a boat that big I would expect to have tenderloins or porterhouses or something...Brats? sheesh, this is not a tailgate man" Two thoughts come to mind: First is sandblasting and painting a boat for someone. Second, I cann't wait to roof your cottage. If ten minutes of work earns you tenderloins or porterhouses, what am I going to get for burning a weekend on your cottage?

Lee, I have heard of it, somewhere north isn't?

Still waiting for Hunting Dave to say something about the pie.

I DON'T WANT NO LEFTOVER FROM LACROSSE, FREEZER BURNT, DRIED OUT PIE!!!!!!

Now make that a fresh one still hot from from the oven, add a dollip (sp?) of icecream ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, well thats a different story. hehe

Have them powder coated. It's cheap and a lot less trouble than the other techniques and will not have to be re-coated in the future.

Dave,

I have tasted his cooking, it is pretty good, but I agree with you on that pie...Tell you what, you come up with Pete/Harker and help flip this, I will make you a custard rubarb pie and one for the road to take home with you. Deal???

Andrew, you owe me, I am recruiting for you and that damn pig of a boat you are building.

Harker, don't forget to bring your lucky shell with you when you come hunting, you might actually get to fire your gun.

"that damn pig of a boat you are building" I sense jeolousy when I read this. Or do you have some issue with size?

And we ain't throwing the scull on top of your boat this weekend. I am too much of a wimp to lift it that high.

Andrew,

To answer your original question, If you use a wire wheel, use a stainless one to avoid the rusting issue mentioned earlier. If you abrade well and use a good zinc chromate primer, the finish coat of paint should hold up very well. For the primer a spray bomb works well for something like your handles, you're not going to using much paint.

If you weren't so far away from me, I might just be bought with a slice of hot pie. :>) :>)

Dave, your up to three pies, brats (which I am willing to bet you cann't get in Iowa) and deep fried cheese curds, how much does it take? While I don't believe I have had Eric's cooking, other than jerky, his wife is an excellent cook and I hope a good sewer. LOL

And thanks for the info.
