That movie..Me and Marley? My buddy who loves Labs as much as anyone here and who has lost a couple in the last few years told me he took his girls to see it since it looked pretty funny..like most Labs...then he said at the end, Marley was on the vets table and 13 years old.....WTF? He said he could barely keep from bawling as he rushed his girls out the door. I guess I thought it was a comedy and wanted to see it but man, I don't need those flashbacks haunting me again right now. My daughter wanted me to take the grandsons because all they saw was the commercials and said he looked like Colby...I told her no, this isn't a kids show.
 
I hear you on that, which reminds me of a recent story about movies...

I let my (almost) 10 year old watch "Band Of Brothers" which is a very good and accurate account (as accurate as it's going to get from Hollywood) of Easy Company, of the US Army Airborne... awesome series.

Anyway, my son and I had a deal... he would have to hide in the kitchen during all the gory parts and he upheld his end of the bargain. During the last part of the series, I fell asleep. I was awoken by my son's screaming and smiling and pointing at the TV...

"Dad... look, I'm watching my first sex scene..." I forgot all about that one...

damned Hollywood.
 
I heard the same thing about that movie. The ads make it look light hearted but they said at the end it is unexpectedly sad.

Yes Lee that's a movie I am never going to see. I am tough as nails on some things but on others not.

Andrew bringing up that show. I had just got a surround system put in by my son. Carol didn't like surround sound or wouldn't like that movie so when she wasn't home I got my chance to watch it. The movie begins in the cemetery which is fairly quiet so I adjust the sound so I can hear them talking. This is good I think. Flash back to a landing craft heading toward the beach. You can hear the waves splashing against the side of the landing craft, some fellow losing his breakfast. Sound is incredible. ALL OF A SUDDEN a round lands ten feet from the landing craft....I come two and half feet out of my chair. The picture window is vibrating. I reach for the remote. It goes sailing to the middle of the living floor. I dive for it. frantically reaching for the sound control..... Yes that a movie I will never forget.
 
Guess I too will cross Me & Marley off my "to see" list. I recall when the movie "Ole Yeller" came out decades ago. Seemed like a great kids movie but not with a happy ending. That would have been another one I wish I'd been warned about.

Pete, that was Saving Private Ryan not Band of Brothers. I agree that the beach landing in a small room with surround sound is pretty hard to deal with.

One of my favorite sound moments in the movie is when it starts to rain and the rain drops on the leaves are mixed with the sound of the gunfire as the boots step through the puddle. Up loud that is seriously confusing few seconds.
 
Thanks for the heads up on Marley and Me Lee. Most things we see in movies don't bother me but I absolutely cannot take watching a dog die or be put down in movies or on tv. I won't watch I am Legend because he has to kill his pet German Shepard. Old Yeller was traumatizing to me back then. That was the 1st time I had to endure that (my Dad was constantly giving the strays I brought home away so I never experienced a dogs death) and it effected me greatly. At that age, I never considered that a dog would die.
 

How about "Where the Red Fern Grows" another Disney feel good movie that tore my heart out when I was a kid.

Thanks for the heads up on Me & Marley, It's been less than a year since we lost our lab Thor of 14.5 years, Don't think the kids would dig that to much and I damn sure know it would get to me.
 
All I can say is if I were a labrador and had an incompetent owner like that guy, I'd be praying for the needle.

I have zero interest in reading a book or seeing a movie about an idiot with a wild dog. Go to a pet store or an obedience class if that's what you like!

Why can't they make a movie about King Buck or something?! haha.

Before I went to see "Saving Private Ryan" I remember reading that the first 15 minutes are pretty tough but after that you should be OK. I was the guy in the theater everyone was looking at during the first 20 minutes 'cause I totally lost it. Then again later when the medic was shot in the liver. The older I get the more emotional I get over patriotic stuff. With the ending of Marley and Me already known, I'll be another one that stays away.
 
There's a sex scene in Band of Brothers? I must have missed that one - darn it. I guess I'll be hitting fast forward on the whole series this weekend.

I was fortuante to have hired as a consultant on a project of mine one of the guys who was the sound consultant for Saving Private Ryan. The things I saw that he did for that movie are unreal. The money that was spent on that first 15 minutes was astonomical. It was worth every cent. Great movie.

Ever see Memphis Belle? ONe of my all time favorite movies. It is about the first bomber from the 12th Ariforce (?) that had a crew that made the 25 sorties requirement. It is "based" upon a true story but I wonder how much of it is real and how much is Hollywood. Absolutely great movie if you have nto seen it.

That and the movie is a poorly done remake of "The Last Man on Earth". I can only take so much poor CGI and bad acting and that movie had too much of both for me. By the time the dog died I was disgusted that even that needed special effects and looked stupid. Tim
 
In reference to Lee's oringinal post, I wish I had read this thread or the book...prior to taking my wife and daughters to Marly and Me on Christmas night. Having had occasion to deal with the final days and subsequent final trip to the vet w/ several labs (albiet chocolate versus yellow) lives, I did not realize this movie would offer three scenes where the throat would develop a dandy of a lump.... although a tremendous story line, I don't think I would recommend this movie to any retriever owners from an entertainment perspective.
The upside..... ole' "tank" my duck dawg (CLM), was the center of attention from mamma and the girls for several days after the movie.
 
We saw it, but knew what we were in for because my 12 year old son has read the book a couple of times. We took our 6 and 9 year old, but prepared them for it. It really is a good movie, although sad in parts (like a modern day Old Yellow). We had plans to take the kids out at the end, but they didn't want to leave. In the end the kids were fine, but my wife and I were bawling!

The good news is that my 12 year old lab that looks EXACTLY like Marley got a new orthopedic dog bed from Cabela's that night and now rules the house.
 
My dad always said that if a dog dies in a movie...especially towards the start of the movie, it'll probably suck.
 
And speaking of war movies, "The Thin Red Line" is one of my favorite war movies and you don't hear about it much. It doesn't focus like Saving Private Ryan but the psycholgocal effect works. I watched it again a couple weeks ago. It isn't very patriotic but it's dead ass realistic. In my opinion.

I'm not sure why they insist on killing dogs in movies...I suspect that writers don't have first hand experience with dogs maybe? Or maybe they're really gay and lots of gay Hollywood types like to cry a lot...not that theres anything wrong with it.

Remember the movie/book Legends of The Fall where by the end of the movie the entire cast pretty much checks out and is buried in that cemetery where everybody gets buried. That bothered me(though the book and movie are pretty laborious)less than hearing the German Shepard in the movie Signs get killed outside as the aliens approach the house.
