Anyone dealt with Jeep heater problems...

I have a 2008 jeep Liberty. Mine sat for the most part over the holidays. Sunday when I went to pick up my pup the heater was blowing luke warm air on the passenger defroster vent and and cool air on the driver side defroster vent. Monday I didn't drive it. Tuesday night I ran it at idle for an 1/2 hour then drove it about 10 miles with same results. Today, same thing, luke warm on passenger side and cool on driver side. No leaking inside or out. Coolant level is where it belongs. Does that sound like a core issue? Oh, it does not have dual temp control.

I have had a Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, never a Liberty. One heater issue was a thermostat, the other was low coolant in theradiator. I have also had a heater problem with my wife's minivan (Chrysler) that was solved by holding the defroster and rear wiper buttons until they button lights began to flash. You could hear all of the valves/motors operating and resynching themselves, worked fine after that. Most of these new vehicles have a BIT test in the temp control panel by holding a couple of buttons. Just my two cents.

Ed along with checking coolant level and thermostat check for vacuum leaks. Most of the damper doors used to mix the air are vacuum operated. IF you have a vacuum leak it could cause the damper doors not to open.

Hmmm...I did replace the battery 3 weeks ago. I wonder if that got something out of sync.

Ed Pull the fuse for heater it should reset the modules for heater doors as Chevy dual climate control use electric verse vacuum

If its been cold in your area, check to make sure your anti-freeze ain't slushing up.

Happened in my truck and the fan would blow ice cold, because it wouldn't get hardly any circulation.

Dave,

I would have thought that when I replaced the battery that would have had the same effect as pulling the fuse but I went ahead and did what you said and now the air flow seems to be the same on both sides. Thanks!

Jon,

It hasn't been cold enough for slush yet. I called the local jeep shop and they told me the suspected it was an actuator that controls the damper that adjusts the amount of cold or heated air into the system.

Probably the servo that moves the blend door in the heater box. My wife's 2004 had that problem. Sounds like same exact symptoms. Very large PIA to get to and fix. Like $2,000 at a dealer. Have to remove entire dash, center consul, drain cooling and AC systems just to get to and remove heater box. We traded hers in because of it. I hope in your case it's something else. Good luck.

Luke,

That's what the dealership dude called it...a blend door. I just had a guy from a Jeep forum tell me the same thing! The guy sent me a link on how to do it myself. It actually shows cutting into the plastic housing where the evaporator is and then cutting into a cavity where the blend door is. Nothing I want to do!!!!

I wonder what the insurance company would say if I was using a colman heater and the Jeep went up in flames?

There are a couple things i have seen with heating issues on Libertys.Worst case are blend doors or actuator. The other is to check to see if you have orange(dex cool) coolant in it.I have seen it jell up in heater cores. You can check to see if both heater hoses are hot,if not you probably have a clogged core. You can try to directly flush the core by removing both hoses.Hope this helps.

Rob,

I read that on several Jeep sites as well. I'm going to have the local radiator shop flush the system and see what happens. I asked the guy at the Jeep shop about worst case cost and he's telling me $800 but I've read several accounts of up to $2,000 like Luke said. My wife has a friend with a Jeep and her problem was when she was running the A/C her bill was over $1700 in a 2004 Grand Cherokee I believe. Since the kids grew up and I went back to wanting a Jeep I've had a 2000 Cherokee, 2004 Wrangler and now this 2008 Liberty. Everyone has had either a wiring harness issue and or a HVAC issues. As much as I loved my old "78" Renegade and my first Wrangler I think I'm done with Chrysler Jeeps.
