Anyone have thoughts on the Ford EcoBoost????

I'm looking at F-150s (as well as other 1/2 tons) and am interested in hearing people's thoughts on the EcoBoost engines. For anyone who doesn't know... they are Ford's newish twin turbo V-6s that produce almost the same numbers as their 5L V8. It isn't something that I'd seek out, but I'm wondering if I find a truck equipped and priced as I'd like that has an EcoBoost if I should pass. Overall, I'd rather just have the V-8, I think - since the performance numbers are the same and fuel effiency is basically the same.

Since buying the camper (5500 GVWR), I've found the Tacoma lacking (big surprise :).

I have no thoughts, but could start a Ford vs Chevy arguement just for fun...(insert strategic punctuation for the humorically-challenged here)

there was a thread last month though...

Thanks Chuck. Crap, I take a few days to go deer hunting a couple weeks ago and I missed that thread (my shame). I wonder what else I missed? - I hope no pictures of spinners.

How about - Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge vs. Toyota vs. Nissan? - might as well have everyone have a dog in the fight. I'm actually likely lookin at Ford and Toyota now, but I'm pissed at my local Toyota dealer, so the Ford is looking good.

Maybe instead of GIVING you the link, I could have given you the link to the search function at the top of the page...

My dad and father-in-law are GM retirees, so I have been a Chevy guy for a long time, BUT I will admitt Toyota makes a good truck...

You would have to be a real d-b to do that :).

It doesn't seem like you can go all that wrong with today's offerings of 1/2 tons. As long as it is a 4x4 with upwards of 300 hp, it will probably come down to price and what cool buttons it has.

Oh, and headlights...to me it seems these engineers have too much time on their hands and are compeeting to see who can design a stupider headlight/grille/hood design...It seems Chevy reciently stole the lead from Dodge on that aspect

Wonder how that happened?!!!

I agree Chuck. An engineers is a guy that designs stuff he'll never have to work on.

Would you believe that valve stem covers started it?

Hi Todd. Have a 2011 Tundra Crewmax and love it. Gas mileage is same as my old Durango that my son now drives, so that was a wash. The rear reclining seat is the biggest of the lot and would definitely be good on your long trips across country for backseat travelers. I tow a large trailer and tractor on occasion with no probs. Ive driven the others over the years and you wont go wrong either way. Anyway, good luck. Trip.

Thanks Trip, I've driven the Tundras and I like them. I'd have to find one for a real good price given my recent dealer issue.

Looked at those at one time. I'd wait a year and see what the reviews are on reliability. Turbo's on a non diesel truck are new I believe. I've seen superchargers on trucks but turbo's should prove interesting.

Turbo's typically do not supply low end torque. Twin turbo's are used sometimes, one small, one large, to get better low end grunt combined with high end boost. Look no fur than than the older R-7s who used that technology rather well. Too bad they had engine troubles.

Great concept. I would wait a year if you can. You will start seeing 8 speed trannies and other goodies to get good gas milage without sacrificing towing capacity.

This does not sound duck related to me, how about checking on the ford, chevy and toyota forums.

Hah ha haha a. Thanks champ, I'll keep your suggestion in mind.

That was my thought Mark. Seems like a lot of parts and stuff to go wrong for little gain. They talk about better fuel economy, but I have not seen it in the reviews I've read.

You could always buy one and let the rest of us know how it works out?

I looked at the F-150 and all the other pick ups out there. I'm at the point in my life where I wanted something comfortable. I really liked the F-150 but it was just too big for what I need. I was hoping Toyota was finally going to change the Tacoma but they just did another minor facelift. I've been waiting two years for Toyota to change that little bugger.

I went out and drove everything. Of all people, my car crazy 15 year old said I should take the new Jeep Grand Cherokee for a drive. I did and never looked back (well sort of).

Time will tell if I miss having a pick up as I've had one for the past 15 years or so. I do miss just throwing everything in the bed and I do have to plan a little more on how I'm traveling and what goes where. Hopefully Santa will be nice to me and get me a nice cargo mat from Weathercraft or someplace with good quality stuff.

Duck hunting went well without the pick up and I measured the rear cargo area to make sure it could hold my ice fishing shack and gear (it will). I am concerned about the ice auger and potentially leaking fuel. Need to make a holder of some type that will hold the engine up at the right angle.

Thanks Mark,

Up until buying the camper I was thinking that the next vehicle could be an SUV and I could manage my truck needs, but given the plans, a truck is in the cards for the long haul.

Jamie,
Welcome to the Forum.
how about filling out your profile like it says to do when you sign up?

Todd,
From your #1 best "New England Canned Chicken" hunting buddy, any turbo is going to add to the maint. of the engine in the long run and the dealerships esp put the wood to the owners on that service because the stuff gets hot and the whole manifold has to be taken apart. Stuffing a block with air to make more power is getting away from the simple Cubes that pull trailers well. But driving that Townin Pig around the rest of the year is hard on the wallet.
My small block F250 with low rear gears and a 6 speed standard is lucky to get 12 mpg with a load of pigs.
Heavy Good Towing Truck=Fuel burnt. Thought about a $hit box 4 banger to drive back and forth daily on the easy stuff? Makes a truck less painful on a monthly basis.

Have to swallow some pride at the light in the Cavalier with the primer on the fenders, but 30 + MPG is nice.

Mr. canned chicken the invite is open to broaden your horizons :).

I get it on the displacement and the parts to break in the turbos - those were my concerns with the EcoBoost (primarily the turbos). Our truck doesn't get a whole lot of daily driver miles other than during hunting season, so that is a positive. I need to stop typing and start shopping.

OK, NDR. I was in the exact same boat with the camper. The old Chevy 1500 wasn't pulling well. As a long time Chevy owner I was all set to buy a Silverado with the 6.2L Camaro motor in it - how bad could that be?? Someone suggested I look at the Ecoboost, so I did, just to be sure. I am now a Ford owner. I pull 6000 lbs without any problems. The six speed tranny is great and the turbos start at 1700 RPM and stop pulling when you let off the throttle.
Someone mentioned durability and I had the same concern about the turbos. Typically, when you shut a turbo engine off, the turbines are still spinning, but since the engine is off, there isn't any oil pressure or oil circulation. The oil that is in the turbo either runs out or over heats. Ford has a separate circulation system for the turbos that runs until the oil hits a certain temp. No cooked oil or bearings. And you have 100,000 mile warranty. That was enough for me.
