Been feeding my Lab regular Eukanuba dog food since he was a pup as it was recommended by the breeder. He is now 9 yrs old,When the fall rolls around and he starts working more and then during hunting season I put him on the "premium grade" for high performance dogs. But it seems like he's not getting enough nutrients from what should be a high performance blend. It seems he cant keep on weight during hunting season.I make sure theres always food in his dish plus fresh water..He never eats it all and I think he doesnt really care for it as most dogs will eat till there isnt anymore. He is in good health and very energetic just very lean.I know some people supplement with eggs,scraps,etc..but Im not big on that, I feel he should get it from his food.Could it be that the food isnt the same as it used to be?..could they be skimping on the recipe?..Iv'e heard of this..has anyone had this problem as well?..

My "dog" friends tell me to start with the higher calorie stuff a month or so before the season starts because once the season starts and he's running around it will almost be impossible for him to put weight on or maintain his weight. Just think, we naturally lose weight when we become very active and it is also much harder to maintain weight let alone put it on if we are very active. I started my dog on Eukanuba but he also seemed to lose interest in it as well. Went to Science Diet and he seems to like that better. I has also used pro plan which he seems to like the best but I am not happy about using this because I am sure he likes it better because it has more crap in it.

Dogs will lose alittle in gunning season increase the amount fed during those active periods cold water makes them burn alot more calories. I feed Eukanuba year round. Use to feed Pro Plan Performance dog didnt seem to like it as much and wasnt worth the extra dough

I don't feed anything continuously. I switch up between the better foods. A couple of bags of one then the other. I figure they're all missing something. Whatever I can get for around a buck a pound. Supplement with egg, yogurt, fish oil, etc. Not much on the table scraps though. But I don't think my dog gets the workouts you guys are talking about.

I fed my Lab Science Diet for her first few years before I switched to Blue Buffalo Wilderness. She was over weight and very active. When I researched, I found out Science Diet was all grains and fillers. Just look at the ingrediants in whatever food you use. The first 2 to 4 should be a meat. I also add (sometimes) venison, chicken, goose or whatever meat or fish I'm eating to her food..

My GrandFather feeds all his beagles Purina High Pro and those guys are always running. I plan to do the same when I get my pup in May.

I used to feed Euk. performance but switched due to a number of reasons. The first was they did change something in their production. The food we were getting on the kennel plan had lots of oil in it. The dogs did good and their coats looked fantastic. Then the food changed - it did not have the oil in it, coats started to look dull. Second the dogs also did not want to eat it (common problem with Euk.). Contacted Euk. and they denied changing anything. This was also at the time that P&G purchased them - go figure what really happened.

I changed to Circle J Extreme dog fuel, dogs have done as good or better than the original Euk and they readily eat it. My old dog is a picky eater and he likes it. Price is about 20% less than Euk. Bass Pro is a dealer.

You many not have Circle J in your area. I would suggest one of the Purina Pro Plan foods - their Performance formula is a very good food.

You should not have to supplement any of the premium foods.

My Chesapeake who is now seven was not his usual self and showing signs of joint pain. Fearing the worst I had him xrayed and it turned out to be spinal arthritis. My vet recommended Holistic Health Extension in chicken flavor. Told me the purina I was feeding him had almost no nutritional value and the alpo cans of slices were filled with sugar.
I took his advice. Feeding himPedigree wet food with the dry food and most important a supplement of MSM powder.
In few words Jack has made a 180 degree change in about three weeks although after retrieving sixty or so ducks in a morning is still stiff.
Spend the extra money and do your research online. Chicken or lamb is very good for working dogs and most dry food, including what you were using is crap according to the vet.
I'm not implying that health extension dry food is the answer, but in Jacks case it really has made a difference with the MSM powder and CosaminDS tablets.
Good luck

When I was in Missouri I was feeding my dogs Enhanced Pro Athlete and was EXTREMELY happy with the health that my dogs got from it. After moving back to the east coast, I wasn't able to find anything locally and was told I would have to buy it by the truckload (semi) if I wanted it shipped to my house. Been giving the dogs Purina One and have been pretty satisfied.

We don't get alot of variety up here. My pup was on Euk/Iams, but after she spent three months at a professional to get her FF polished off I stuck with the Purina High performance stuff. I need to feed her less of that than the Euk to get the same health qualities for her. She is pretty fit for a big blocky bodied lab. During the season she gets more food and protein snacks in the field.

I just switched to Eukanuba and after 3weeks, I'm very happy. I was feeding the super high end stuff like. Origen and taste of the wild. My setter looks better and has more sustained energy in the field. Feeding the same amount!
