Asian carp ndr

The state of Illinois has proposed a Asian carp shotgun season.
I honestly thought you were just joking.

People are encouraged to shoot into the water from a boat?? Thats unbelievable.

Just looking thru the Michigan rules...suggesting some changes should that legislature decide to follow Illinois' example
It Is Unlawful To:
.
Possess or sell
a multi-pointed hook with a weight permanently
attached. You can, however fish with a shotgun.
Possess
illegally taken fish or mutilated fish that cannot be
measured or identified except if said mutilation happens while fishing with a shotgun.
Fish with your hands, firearms, explosives, crossbows, setlines,
poisons, or methods other than lawful fishing methods. Just kidding...feel free to blast away..
Shoot
reptiles or amphibians with a firearm (including spring, air, or
gas propelled). Just kidding...feel free to blast away.
Fish on a river, stream, or drowned river mouth
(see Note 3, p.10)
using a weight suspended below any hook
unless the hook is on a
dropper line (a leader) that is at least 3” and affixed to the barrel of your shotgun.
Snag
fish or retain a fish not hooked in the mouth. You can, however fish with a shotgun.
Do you have to be at least 450 feet from the nearest boatload of yahoos after Asian Carp?

I really wasn't kidding when I said I was in. I'm picturing a spring day after a long Vt winter. Put the boat in the water, put in your best catchers mask, enlist an equally bored friend to swap off with you after you've fired your box of shells, and go home with a huge _____ eating grin on your face. Imagine the tail gate picture....

YOu know Tod, its funny you should ask that....I have always assumed that they must not taste good or be a real pain to process, 'cause I've always wondered why nobody has gone to the trouble of scooping them up via a commercial operation? That much fish density, it wouldn't take you all that long to catch a huge batch of them. Whether for chowder or fertilizer, they gotta be good for something.

My wife's cousin raises them on a large aquaculture farm here in Central AR. They only raise and have always raised triploid steril asian carp. They were the 1st in the country to do that dating back more than 40 years. Others aren't as diligent in their process of sterilization. Hence the escaped and propagating version out there. Anyway, though the early markets were for G and Fish Depts around the country to control weeds and algae, their market has changed. It is by far and away the asian restaurant business. Long story short, if you eat fish in a chinese restaurant, odds are you are eating carp. Bon appetit!!!!!!! I have had it cooked on the farm and it turns out pretty good. Trip.

So not leaping walleye :).

I've never eaten walleye, so my idea of pretty good may be a bit skewed. Even with that, I love it when a restaurant tries to serve up walleyed pike (like the one I went to this weekend). OK, what is it a walleye or a pike? They don't like it when I ask them that. Trip.

Thats funny when I was in Germany a few years ago I was in a very nice restaurant that had Perchpike on the menu. I asked the waiter what is Perchpike? He didnt know so he went and asked the chef what it was. Turned out it was a piece of each, 1 piece of perch and 1 piece of Pike. Was very good with a tall glass of Bavarian beer.

Walleye is one of the better fishes I've eaten., but I've never had a steady supply of walleye, so maybe it is partly the mystique.

John,

From the videos I've seen, you'd be better to gun off the stern or sides than the front. If the boat is moving fast enough, the fish are jumping as or slightly after the boat passes.

Would be a challenge.

What would be the preferred load for carp? To get a killing shot you're talking pretty massive penetration through the scales, bones, skull, etc.

I'm sure PETA will have a field day...

My weapon of choice would be the Remington 870 Fishmaster...not sure if barrel length would be an issue shooting at carp with the Judge.

Although an image is forming...standing in the back of the boat, eyes squinted, one of those Clint Eastwood cigars in the corner of the mouth and twin Judges in holsters, purist style, only drawing and shooting when they jump.

I like the image. Go with an Ithaca '37 Fishslayer and only shoot your Judges single action for effect.
