Had a email conversation today with my state biologist and he said NY is pushing for expanded spring seasons on Canada Geese. Particularly in April. Also he said an August season can be implemented without reduction in the regular goose season since it would fall outside of the 107 limitation on any specie specific season since it is conservation oriented. I myself would rather see some days shaved off our September season and have them added in early March if possible. Thought I would pass this along and perhaps if you are in this flyway and would like changes send an email to you F&G biologist. Not in favor of April or August for waterfowl hunting here as to much conflict with public and that time of the year I have other items on my radar.

The only way I'm hunting geese in August is standing in the water with shorts on to stay cool. April would be nice weather wise, but geese are starting to nest then. Need the young dumb geese for fall. Here in NJ, at least down here in the southern part of the state, we reduce the resident goose numbers to a manageable level. Some golf courses might disagree, but you don't find many large concentrations of birds. The problem is the place that have them, there is no way to hunt them.

We have a healthy flock of resident geese in Southern Maryland. It's actually a pretty good tune up for the boat, dog, dekes, gear, etc. Yes, it does get a little sticky, but it makes for a good day of going after geese in the morning and doves in the afternoon.

We have had a bang up year for resident population of geese this year in South NJ. They have done very well breeding this spring. Each of the nesting birds have had no less than 7 little ones following them. The local parks are flooded with resident geese everywhere. I am trying to think of a way to get at them. These park geese have to taste good. They are free range grass fed!

After banding geese at the end of June (Cumberland, Salem, Gloucester & Cape May Counties) and seeing how many goslings are around this year, September should be fun.
