Attaching Gunnel bags to gunnels...

I have a pair of Gunnel Bags by Diane and although there are the little plastic mounts included I'm not quite sure what to use to attach those little buggers to the actual gunnel of my boat (14 foot aluminum V-hull). I was thinking about screws or small bolts, but wasn't sure which. Any thoughts??

Thanks,

Brian

I had mine made with grommets instead of the twist locks.

I then drilled holes & mounted aluminum open ended knurled riv-nuts into the top rail/gunnel.

The knurled type grip better & you get less spin-outs!!!

Working around & owning (4) four aluminum boats, I can't live w/o them.

I then attached them by using a s/s bolt & large flat washer.

Just make sure you use anti-seize on the bolt threads to reduce electrlosys.

Brian,

I put those plastic clips in my junk drawer and used snap clips (like on a dog lease). Not that the plastic clips wouldn't work, i just needed more slack between the bag and gunnel. My snap clips are held on by small plastic D-rings screwed to the gunnel. got them from lowes.

if you don't want to drill holes in your boat, you could try 3M 5200, or 5100. Or even "attach" a wood stip to your gunnel with 5200 and screw into it.

--------------------------------------- I am not sure what gunwale bags are, or even the hardware in the link above. Would those things be OK to mount grass rails to the decking? I seem to remember seeing some sort of hardware like that for the places where you can't reach behind and put a nut on the bolt. I will need those things soon. Dave

Hey, thanks. Which of those two would you use for 3/8 plywood covered with fiberglass? The softwood ones? I assume those would epoxied in?

That would be my pick also but I have no personal experience using them in plywood.

As designed, epoxy isn't needed to hold these in place but a light coat of epoxy in the hole (prior to insertion) would be a good way to seal the wood. Just be sure to keep from getting any epoxy on the internal threads of the insert. A light coat of grease on the internal threads might act as a release agent in preventing any errant epoxy from sticking to the internal threads.

Brian,I too purchased goose gunnel bags from diane, bags are all she does and has a lot of experience with different applications. She suggested using footman loops ,she sewed i1" black nylon straps to the bags fitted with fastex type snap buckles.I bought footman loops off ebay and secured them with stainless screws. The set up works well for storage and transportation, when hunting i flatten the bags and roll them over the gunnel and behind the blind. This gives access to the shelves and the the lower decoy storage.Bill.

Mine from Diane have been in my boat with the plastic devices attached to 1/2" PT plywood going on 10 years without issue!
