August "Whats on your workbench?"

Each bird you do Roy is getting better and better! A little tweeking here and there and you'll be off to the races. Good job my friend.
 
Thanks guys. You are all very inspirational. I am open to any thoughts on how I can improve. I don't have any mentors out this way...so the forums are where I get my edumucation.
 
Here is a mid-month update on what I've been working on.

First up is the drake wigeon. I'm calling this one done. What I tried to do with the paint was to make it dark yet colorful and vibrant. Another thing that I tried to do was put a lot of thick texture in the paint.

I've started to paint my drake ruddy. Once again I've painted it with the Impasto technique with thick texture. The paint was wet on the head when I took these photos. This decoy needs some warming and shadowing glazes over the next couple of days.

I still need to finish carving the hen to pair up with this ruddy.
 
And I'm going to call this post a study in similar yet different shapes. You know black ducks and mallards are very similar in body and head shapes. What I did on these next three decoys was to try carve the shape with a different perspective.

First up is a hen black duck that is prepped and base coated. At this point I'm ready to start painting.

And then I have a different way to look at almost the same subject. This is one of "Toronto slick" decoys that I've been playing with. Almost ready to be primed. This is going to be painted as a drake mallard.

And once again this will be painted as a drake mallard too. Something that has been sitting around my basement for a couple of years that I decided to finish because I'm going to be painting mallards. This decoy is something you probably will not see coming from me again, the body is made from cork. A much more stylized interpretation but still the same theme.

I'm working on lots of other things also I'll show them to you as they progress.
