Autumn wings heads?

I just got a bunch of their wooden replacement heads that I ordered. I?m curious to know how they hold up long term? Will the paint stay nice if I take adaquate care of the or should I coat them with something?

I also need to drill holes in them to attach them, I?m guessing a drill press would be best?

I used them on some Herter SucDuc decoys that my artistic wife repainted for me. I did not use a drill press, but just held and drilled the holes "Hillbilly". I didn't put any additional coating on them either. They turned out quite nice and have held up well, too.

Good morning, Ken~

I seal any wooden head with Spar Varnish before painting. I sand with 120- or 150-grit once that cures thoroughly.

For my gunners, I then prime the whole bird with a flat oil. I use Black, White, Brown or Grey to approximate the tone of the topcoats. Then I topcoat with latex.

Glad you're cooking right along!

What species are you making them?

Good to know about the sealing, I do have a few unpainted ones. I?ll be turning these into Scoter, Eider, and some giant Bufflehead, the bodies will be a mix of corkers and Herters 72 divers that I?ve picked up second hand. My paint jobs aren?t as nice as yours, but seem to get the job done

Good to know, I?m happy to hear that a drill press isn?t necessary, I didn?t want to go buy one
