Bandsaws

Can someone tell me what seems to be the most popular bandsaw and what size throat. I can't remember what size I used to have when I used to carve 20 years ago. I know it was a craftsman but I can't remember anything else. Alot has changed so I am just trying to make the right purchases with the knowledge of the carvers of today. Thanks in advance for any advice. I have been sitting all day making a list of all the equipment I used to have but things like a sculpters Adz is hard to find

Bill, 14"-18" bandsaws are popular, and most new saws can be had with a extension block for more height capacity. Carvers Adz's can still be found at most WOODCRAFT stores.

Jode, Thanks alot for that Ifigured it would have to be about there I just wanted to hear someone a little more upto date. I live in the center of Va. at a place called Lake Monticello and I am not sure if even the city of charlottesville would have what I need. I lived the first 40 years in Keyport N.J. and there I could find just about anything. Thanks again

14" with a riser block seems to be a very popular choice. That will give you up to 12 inches of clearance in both height and throat. Bigger saws are nice, but cost skyrockets when you go above a 14". I have a JET, but the biggest thing is make sure whatever brand you choose offers the riser. Alot of 12", and even a few 14 inch have a 1 piece frame, so you cannot add a riser.

Bill:
Good advice from all, look at the following brands (in no order): Grizzly, Jet & Delta (Laguna if you have the bucks).

14" w/ a riser block is the minimum you would want for decoys.

Good luck!

Bill, look at the Rikon 14" deluxe. Best value on the market and can resaw up to 14" without a riser. Check out the reviews on the web....runs about $750.

Bill I run the JET 14" open stand with the Rider block also, I added Carter guides after 2 years and its
a workhorse of a saw for the money. The ADZE like said before woodcraft.com has them.

If you aren't in a huge hurry you can probably find a used Delta/Rockwell 14" saw in your area for under $350, maybe a lot lower. Ebay sometimes and particuarly craigslist can help you find a good deal. They are tried and true designs and parts, should you ever need any, are easy to find. I'd steer clear of imports in the 14" range without doing a lot of homework first on a particular model.
