The past 2 days have been fighting with the glass on the bottom. Whoever glassed this boat used chop strand mat but only to glass in the ice runners. They put down a layer of 6oz then the runners and keel and then covered them with chop strand mat and another layer of 6oz glass. I don't want to remove the runners and keel. I am going to glass them back in like they were. They lasted 20yrs that way so far. I was thinking of putting a strip of oak over them. It would act as the removable part should they get dinged up.
The belt sander worked wonders on the poly resin I started with 80 grit but went to 50. I am taking off 90% of the resin with the belt sander then gonna go back over with the orbital and clean it up.

Quick question should I fill all the cracks between the planks and fill low spots with epoxy and wood flour before I sand with the orbital? I think this will save a step and less sanding in the long run. Should I leave it with 90% clean of poly resin fill and fair the finish sand. Here are a few pics of where I am at wood flour came today epoxy tomorrow.

I built a devlin BB the same way with glass under the keels. If you're going through this much work you really should remove the keels before glassing the hull That virtually ensures no rot can get into the hull. As for filling the seams before sanding out the hull I don't think it matter one way or the other. My 2 cents worth

Yeah after thinking about it I have gone this far. I need to take the runners and keel off and glass. It won't be hard to make new ones. And that way I won't have to worry about water getting to the hull. Thanks gary

Chris, a lot of builders/rebuilders use strips of 1/8" thick aluminum for wear strips over the keels. Bed them in 5200 & a few screws & they'er on for life. I don't know if filling/fairing the hull as you sand down the remaining poly. will save any time or not, but rember when ya fill the cracks& low spots, "paint" UNthickened epoxy before ya fill with the thickened epoxy. This allows more of the epoxy to penetrate the wood& bond the thick stuff to the hull. Enjoy your project& good luck with it!

Chris, I also forgot to tell you ice runners go on after your fiberglassed, not before. You'll be inviting rot if you get water behind there from the inside or outside. Chris
