Well headed down to MS sound based on a breezy chilly forecast.
The wind has died, sun is out and I'm down to a long sleeve tshirt and waders, and no birds flying. I'm here gonna stick it out. Updates to follow.

there's no open small water here

heck - my front door was iced this morning

I was out last night ice fishing. -5F with a wind howling. Kept blowing out the heater which was not fun. I have a foam floor I lay down to keep the feet off the ice and left part of it on the ice as it froze to it. No short sleeves for me.

Just had what I thought was a teal buzz me. Turned out to just be one of our salt marsh mosquitoes. :)
Forgot the Off! spray.

They are forecasting a low of 22 and high around 34 here on Sunday. Which is just simply freaking cold for down here.

At least you are hunting, the river is up-too high to hunt -not high enough to produce sheet water or flood fields. The local lakes are not producing. Very cold this a.m. about 20 degrees coldest yet to come snowing as i write this.
Four day muzzle loader starts this weekend temps supposed to be in teens to single digits. Come on up i'll put you in a tree stand.

Shot a nice drake hoodie, wasn't someone looking for hoodie flank feather for fly tying??

Good Job Carl... keeps me at my desk! ERRRR I need to get out... snow and cold on its way tonight and tomorrow and I have a Sick boy at home! I need a Nanny!

Phil Allen--Dave Allen's son. I'm sure he'd appreciate some hoodie flank. It really is the best of the duck flank feathers for flies . . . . .

Carl, what do you do with those mergs? I once shot a hooded merg on a beaver pond when I lived in Georgia that swooped in with a bunch of wood ducks. Interestingly, it was full of acorns so I was hopeful it might be edible. I roasted it with three woodies in the pan. I left the house for a bit and when I got back the house smelled like fish. The wood ducks had taken up the fishy smell as well. I offered the merg to my tom cat and he sniffed it and hauled ass. Have you had better luck cooking them? Thanks for the hunting updates.

one word: JERKY!

Back in 1996, I also roasted the first hoody I shot, same situation: hunting woodies. And same smelly result!

Ended the day with the hoodie drake, 3 buffies (1 hen, 1 juvie drake and 1 mature drake) and my two redheads. Not much moving until 2:00, then the redheads started piling in from open water. The one hen circle me twice, barking. I barked back & she did a U-turn & came right back. By time I had to start picking up at 3pm, there was a raft of 200+ redheads feeding south of me. From the sound of the shots to the west of me, other guys got in on the action too. I'll be heading back this weekend after the predicted big blow rolls through.

Too much brown but I'll take it. One order of Jerky coming up!

Turned in to a great hunting day for you! Thanks again for keeping us posted. I think those drake buffies are pretty little guys. I have a drake buffy decoy that our own Yukon Mike made for me. I stick him on the outside of my GE decoys and the little Judas draws in the buffleheads.

Buffies here are funny, some days you cant keep them out of the decoys. Other days they will buzz you but never commit.
But either way, having at least a couple of buffy decoys seems to make a difference.

Carl,

This was a nice hunt. Thanks for sharing the adventure in real time.

How many of us have chased the weather report to find the report/birds a bit shy of expectations?! Glad you were rewarded, and no lost sleep about "brown". We live in an age we can be moral, but the cost is often less time in the field. Enjoy the harvest and the day, best in the solar system fer sure, maybe the Universe ;-)
