It's been a while since I hunted an early teal season in FL. I decided I would head out to one of the local lakes and see about finding some wood ducks. I haven't been out to the lake in a long while and I knew it was going to be a zoo. I hadn't scouted. I also had forgotten to put longer line on the decoys so I didn't end up tossing many out. There were a lot of folk on the water. There was not a lot of shooting. I was kind of surprised at that because the area is usually pretty good for wood ducks. I heard only one squealing wood duck though. Didn't have any fly over. One of the hunters at the boat ramp said that the population has taken a big hit lately. I'm not really sure why. Anyway, I did get lucky. And luck it truly was because there wasn't much out there flying. However, if I wanted a mess of moorhen that would have been an easy thing to do. I might go back for some moorhen since I have family coming down this coming weekend. Moorhen poppers might be just the thing while we all sit around having a great big birthday party for all of us.
I don't know that I will get out again for the early teal season but it sure was nice listening to the chorus of frogs and watching the sun rise over the lake again.
