Anyone have any advise or effective tools for bluebill calling ? We burr at them with our regular duck calls but questionable if it makes any difference.
I called them for years by mouth/ I currently have an illusiondiver call. I don't think it makes much of a distance on large flocks, but 1,2s,3s and fours works great
We've tried calling them but flagging works better than any call. I picked up a lot of tips from Lou Tisch's posts on here, tried them and it brings in way more divers than a call. That beeing said, it seams like we always have someone in the boat blowing a duck call when there coming in. I thnk its more of a getting attention thing with divers more so than talking there language. Just my thoughts on it

We burr at them by voice, but I think it's more for our be benefit then theirs, The flagging works though, just try to flag when they're still way out, gives them time for minor course corrections to line up.
I have a diver call and use it at times. Does it work? Dont know.
I'm pretty sure I've turned a flock or two with it but maybe they were just coming in my direction anyway?
I have also waved my black hat at passing flocks and had them turn back, I'm going to try to make a real flag before this season.
The diver flags I have seen basically look like the goose flags you see in Cabelas, just smaller.
I was going to use a long dowel with a "T" at the end & some black clothe.
Scotts on the money there, A wet flag just makes everyone else in the boat get crap in there eyes. I use a broom stick with a 1foot x 2foot piece of old dog bed on it. ITs dark, and easy to replace. I dont have to worry about freezing here.
I wouldn't go diver hunting without a diver call. I either use a regular mallard call (Oldt double reed) and trill & growl into it. I've turned and landed flocks that exceeded 10 dozen birds right here in Lake St. Clair. It's highly effective IMHO.
I also have an adjustable diver call from Jack Wilson and that call works great also.
The calling is especially important if you are in a layout boat and you have some fog or haze. The birds tend to dive into your rig when they know that "friends" are there calling to them.

Although they are vocal birds , the right set up and some flagging cant be beat . It s all bout the set up and whether they are feeding , roosting , loafing , or mating . Get between where they want to be/go and your shoot will be over so fast you have to go looking for somehting else to shoot . Even mallards . lol
