boat help - but not duck boat

the bench seats on my ski boat are made with something like a foam support board glued to the bottom of the seat foam and the vinyl is wrapped and stapled to it. As would be expected, someone jumped into the boat (onto the seat) from the dock and broke the foam support board. I need to fix it but not sure how to proceed. I think I can unstaple the vinyl from the board and basically cut the actual seat foam away from the foam support board. then staple it all back together on a wood support board.

Just need to know what wood to get and how to seal it so it does not rot or hold water. I am willing to use something other than wood but I dont know what that would be.

any help is appreciated.

PS dont have any photos of the foam support board but it looks like a thicker version of a foam poster board

I'm having a hard time visualizing the foam support board. Certainly plywood was used for such applications for many decades. You would not need marine ply for this job. I would probably use half-inch (or 3/4 if it's pretty big) AC plywood - sealed all sides with epoxy (2 coats best) after you cut it to final size and shape.

Hope this helps!

thanks! Add another project to the todo list.....

I will try to get a photo of the current support board this weekend. I find it to be "cheap"

Can you just fasten a piece of plywood to the bottom of the existing broken seat? Don't unstaple anything, leave the busted foam board in the seat and fasten the plywood to it?

a little hard to see but this is the "foam" bottom/support board that i have to replace. the foam is attached so i will have to cut it lose. A new replacement seat is $590 (not happening)

going to have to unstaple it and replace it because the wood would show with how it sits on the boat.

I would just cut a piece of plywood to fit, remove the seat foam and the upholstery from the foam backing, and then staple it back on. Just make sure the thickness of the plywood is the same as the foam board so it will seat and fit properly. I had a seat and backrest on the front of the console of my Robalo CC, and had them re-upholstered using just the old seat foam and making a new plywood bottom. The original plywood lasted about 25 years in the salt, so I doubt that the wood rotting will be a problem. You likely have plenty of air circulating under the seat anyway. That will also give you much more strength. I wouldn't overthink this one, there is nothing really to be gained, you just need a working seat again.
