Boat Insurance?

Do you guys carry insurance on your wooden boats?

Talked with my insurance agent yesterday (American Family) and he won't insure my boat. Well, he won't insure my boat for anything more than materials. I have eighteen months of about 20 hours a week in this thing, not that the cost of materials hasn't added up, but my time invested is worth something to me. For quick numbers I have about $7K into the boat and trailer, with another $2K in the motor. With my time, I figured I wanted the boat insured for about $30K, based on looking at the cost of similar boats for replacement value.

Any ideas?

I insured with Heritage Marine Insurance (underwritten thru Zurich)....

All Heritage insures is wooden boats. If they'll insure me, they'll insure anyone.

Have you ever posted a pic of your boat?

Thanks, A

Contact Christi Marine Insurance
They cover many of our members boats

Jim is that who you used for your liability? Now that NJ requires it I need to get a policy. Any idea on the premiums for a sneakbox? Thanks.

State farm insures mine, I told them it was home built and gave them an estimate of value for replacement (by Devlin). I've always been suspicous of what would happen if I ever made a claim.

Tell us more. They know it is a home built. How much is the policy (my state farm for the snowgoose is under 200, I think $150 per year)?

Tod,

I think I pay about 250/year...

Boat + motor...

Boat is insured for $6k I think. Motor - obviously has a declining value every year.

I bought it primarily for the liability... in case I hit someone blah...

I have my boat insured with state farm. I took my marine police inspection papers along with several photos of the boat to my agent. I pay $14 a month for $10,000 coverage on my cackler, 27 hp mudbuddy, and trailer. The insurance on my son's war eagle is $10 a month for $6500 coverage. But, I was told that they would not insure the boat without an inspection. They just didn't say the inspection can come from the marine police. They indicated it would have to come from a marine engineer and cost several hundred dollars. Needless to say my black brant built in 96, motor ( new mudbuddy with 8 hours ) and trailer were trashed this last season when my son experienced a deer encounter. GET INSURANCE!

Hello, Check with Charter lakes insurance. They only insure boats. They have a lot of different underwriters. Sincerely, Tom Ayers.
